It took about 1000 years before their descendants in the Song Dynasty figured out that they could be used for navigation too. 1190 was the first year that a compass was used in the Islamic and Western worlds.
They got popular and fast. They were useful in aiding in the direction of travel in winter, when there was no visible the sun or constellations. This enabled sailors to take safer and more precise journeys.
