When Isabella was 16, she married the Duke of Mantua. Their court became a centre of learning, music, and the visual arts. The Duke of Mantua was often away on military campaigns. While he was away, Isabella ruled the city-state in his absence.
Her leadership introduced new perspectives on culture, and proved her ability to rule as a woman.
She successfully took control of Mantua’s military force and held off invaders. Her leadership style was considered to be highly assertive and competent, much more so than her husband.
The Duke was displeased with her reputation being greater than his, and the two of them separated while she travelled the world learning new things. When he passed away, Isabella returned to Mantua and temporarily took over again, and eventually helped her son to lead the city state with great success.
She was a successful leader, popular inspiration, and founded her own school for girls.
