Along with the flawed representative sampling, the essay is also less persuasive in its suggestions. Before conclusion, Singh has commented on the supermarkets with low prices that she thinks as useless. Also, she suggested decreasing the poverty ratio but she has not identified the ways to decrease it. As she stated, "Tackling nutritional inequality will require more than putting supermarkets in low-income neighborhoods. These interventions won't change what food means to the poor families I met. But lifting them out of poverty could." (Singh, 3). It is suggested that reducing prices for poor people at supermarkets is not the solution to building a habit of eating healthy food among poor American families. She suggested taking the poor families out of poverty but did not suggest how it should be done. When denying or rejecting one strategy, we always need to suggest alternative means. Supermarkets with low prices are an attempt to reduce poverty orHelp poor people with fair and low prices. Either research, or a speech, when a problem is highlighted and discussed, the researcher always includes certain strategies, solutions, and suggestions to solve the problem. Otherwise, it weakens the credibility of the research as well as the essay. Singh has criticized this solution and suggested that poverty needs to be controlled. She has focused on what should be done but has not explained how it should be done if the current strategy is not applicable. Singh has suggested that poor people can also avoid unhealthy food if they are provided with enough sources of income to reduce their poverty so they raise their standards of raising their children. What those economical means should be and how they can be accessible to each poor family and who will provide them with those opportunities are not elaborated. In this way, her research is not effective because she does not suggest ways to pull poor people out of poverty. Her essay seems to be highlighting the problems and not focusing on the solutions and strategies to control poverty which makes it less effective to persuade the
audience.
In short, Singh in her research tried to highlight the socioeconomic factors responsible for the unhealthy diet of poor American families. Her essay is less effective because she has not
considered the importance of factors such as ethnicity, location, and race of people while sampling. She has conducted her research over a small sample from California and considered it representative of all of America. Also, she concluded her essay with a criticism of the superstores with low prices and suggested controlling poverty. The essay is less effective because she has not suggested alternative means to take poor people out of poverty. All these factors make her essay less, and persuasive and shaken not only the validity of her research but also the credibility of the speaker.
