Minecraft Says 'No' To NFTs

Mojang Studios, the makers of the popular Minecraft is adopting a model from the old U.S. anti-drugs playbook, but it appears "Just Say No" is more effective in blockchain-based money-making schemes than it did for drugs.

The blog of the studio owned by Microsoft said Wednesday that NFTs in Minecraft were "generally not something we will support and allow." The blog also stated that it was updating its Minecraft Usage Guides to clarify that blockchain technology is not allowed to be integrated into the Minecraft client. In addition, NFTs that are built on game content (e.g items, skins, mods) are not able to be used to create NFTs.

The developers wrote that blockchain technology's notions of digital ownership are based on "scarcity and exclusion", which "doesn't coincide with Minecraft values of inclusion, creativity and playing with others."

This is exactly what was actually happening. A NFT project called Blockverse was, according to reports, created to serve the Minecraft universe, scammed an estimated $1.2 million from those early investors who bought Blockverse characters in NFT form on sites such as OpenSeas. The project also offered $Diamond cryptocurrency. The project creators removed all the money invested and wiped out the website, Discord and Twitter accounts. This is commonly referred to as"rug pull" or "rug pull" and it's very frequent in the crypto space.

The Minecraft developers did not rule out potentially including blockchain tech in the future but they also said "we have no plans of adding blockchain technology to Minecraft as of now."

It is likely that the projects that had been trying to integrate Minecraft into blockchain technology weren't as excited by the announcement. NFT Worlds, a blockchain-based company where users can purchase NFTs for digital environments, primarily Minecraft-were hit hard. The company posted an Discord message to its Twitter account saying they were working on solutions "around the Minecraft EULA changes," adding they were even considering pivoting to creating their own Minecraft-like game platform.

In August 2021, data from Statista, Minecraft is still being played by 141 million players each month, despite the game being more than 13 years old. Helen Chiang, the Minecraft studio head who is the studio's head, said to Edge Magazine in a 2019 interview that the average age of Minecraft players was 24. Chiang said that the game was created to be kid-friendly. For Minecraft players, the ERSB rating is for 10 years old or older. Having a money-making investment scheme built into the client does raise warnings and the possibility of abuse, particularly when you make children susceptible. Chiang reported to have stated to Edge that "We should be very transparent and clear about how we intend to make money in the game."

Roblox is another game designed to children, has also embraced the idea of monetization as well as in-game promotions specifically designed for children. Users are incentivized to spend Roblux on in-game items while exploring worlds designed to promote products from brands like Vans, Nike, and Ralph Lauren. Still, the company behind Roblox updated its community standards in the past year to take a vague look at the potential use of NFTs in-game. Roblox users aren't allowed to pay compensation for acting as models for assets.
