A Family Minecraft Policy

A family Minecraft policy

April 13 15th, 2015

Minecraft has become a global phenomenon because kids enjoy playing it and teachers and parents praise the way it fuels creativity and learning. We've been hesitant about the game in our house due to the compulsive behaviour and conflict it seems to prompt in many families.

After much discussion and discussion, we're willing to let our children play Minecraft. First we asked them five questions about how we could keep our Minecraft obsession in check...and created the family's policy based on their input. Here's the policy that both our children required to sign up for before they could access Minecraft accounts.

Our Family Minecraft Policy

Principles

1. Getting Minecraft is an EXPERIMENT. 2. Playing Minecraft is a PRIVILEGE not an entitlement. 3. Mum and Dad must know what you're doing on Minecraft. We will also set limitations on the amount and time you can play. 4. We recommend that you make use of Minecraft to CREATE BUILD, BUILD, LEARN and CODE. 5. We will frequently review and assess the impact of Minecraft on our families and on your personal development and learning. We would like to hear from you on how Minecraft has been rewarding for you. We also would like you to share your concerns with us and help us find solutions.

Rules

1. You can only play Minecraft during game time. As a reminder, this means that you can play for 30 minutes each day on weekdays (Monday through Friday) between 4-6:30 pm - 1 hour per day on weekends (Saturday and Sunday) between 10-6:30pm - holidays and pro-d days still count as weekdays

2. MINECRAFT SERVERS Each child will have their personal username, which they are able to help choose. Each child will be assigned a password for Minecraft by their parents. We will enter your password for you and you will not be able to access your password. In this allows us to manage your use. 3. Only Survival mode and Creative mode are allowed. We will not let you play in Survival mode if it causes problems during gameplay. 4. Only servers you've signed up for are permitted to play. 5. Do not steal from your family members or friends' chests. 6. In Minecraft (or any other place), you can't kill your siblings or friends. 7. You can't trap unless you are in a world specifically designed for trapping. You must have a plan to handle any trapping incident that may occur when you accidentally caught or killed. 8. You cannot download modsor maps textures packs, mods or any other file. If you are looking to download something you will have to contact us for assistance with downloading onto your computer so that we can make sure that the files are safe to download. 9. You can EARN mods maps, texture packs, maps and other add-ons by showing us what you've designed, built, or written yourself. The more we see you creating, the more we will be willing to expand Minecraft for you. This applies to free downloads as well as paid mods/maps/expansions. 10. If we request you to show us your Minecraft screen at any given time, you will immediately display it. 11. Your game, progress, or creations should be saved prior to the time the game is over. If you don't save, you will lose your progress. 12. Your job is to ensure that Minecraft is played out without a hitch at the end of your activity. This includes avoiding complaining, screaming, or seeking more time. Before you play you should plan how you will transition from Minecraft to your next activity. Tell us your plan before you begin playing. That plan might include: - Taking three deep breaths - Going for a walk around the block - Getting out your book of choice, and having it ready for you - asking us to set up a board game we can play once you're done playing Minecraft

13. Any violation of this policy could result in loss of Minecraft privileges for a period of up to a week. The violations include, but are not limited to: - Asking for extra time – Asking to play before the game's time – arguing when Minecraft is over - Changing or sneaking into Minecraft Downloading filesHide your screen or delaying giving it to us when we ask for it.

14. If we have continued problems with Minecraft, we will remove Minecraft from all of our devices and there will be no Minecraft in our home for at least 3 months. This policy will be applicable to BOTH kids even if just one of you has difficulty managing Minecraft.

* These rules were modified by Caryn Talty's Minecraft rules at Health-Family.org. Rule #6 is taken verbatim.
