Understanding Temperament

In the earliest days of Greece, Hippocrates had an interesting theory regarding temperaments. Hippocrates believed that emotions are affected by bodily fluids and that temperaments reflect this. Later, Galen described the temperaments as a classification of cold and hot characteristics, and he believed that it was an ideal person to have a well-balanced temperament. The temperaments were named in honor of the four bodily humors.

Characteristics

The three different temperaments all have certain characteristics. For instance, a sanguine person will have many friends and will be always willing to help even when they don't always know what to do. A person with a phlegmatic temperament, however, will be more measured and analytical in their thinking and may not be as active. This personality type is adept in mediation, diplomacy, and remaining calm when faced with stressful situations.

People with a positive temperament tend to display positive characteristics than negative ones. A person with a negative personality is completely different. A person with a negative disposition is more likely to be an impulsive. Negative temperaments are more likely worry more than laugh and could be impatient.

Another type of temperament is the choleric. A choleric is easily distracted by new experiences, and their focus is difficult to switch. They are often impulsive, and their emotions are often very powerful. However they can be successful in certain situations, and they excel at taking on projects with high stakes. They must ensure they are in control of their behavior, and work in a calm manner to avoid becoming too intense or too impulsive.

The melancholic personality can be very sensitive , but they are often incapable of expressing themselves. They are sensitive to many emotions, but display no visible signs. A melancholic might appear calm on the outside, but they are emotional and unsure from the inside. They can also be shy and may not laugh easily.

The sanguine temperament is the most outgoing and social of the three temperaments. They are excellent in interacting with others and can often be organized but lack communication skills. They are also more likely to be easily distracted. They may indulge in excessive drinking, drugs, or other vices.

Historically, the term temperament was first used by Hippocrates and is taken from the Latin word "temperans," meaning moderate. Another definition of temperament is the proportion of different parts in a person's bodies. The temperament of a person is determined by the ratio of yellow, red, and black bile that is present in their blood.

Signs and symptoms

Temperament is a personality characteristic that influences how we react to new situations and how severe our anger is. It also affects our ability to recover from them. Children have different temperaments and parents must be looking for ways to help each one flourish. For example, some babies are extremely energetic and difficult to cope with, whereas others are quiet and sleep well.

The child's temperament is mostly determined by their environment and genetics. The character of a child is affected by their upbringing in the family and family relationships as well as interactions with parents and other family members. Certain life circumstances can trigger personality disorders. They can cause disruption to lives and cause substance abuse or social isolation.

A number of studies on depression and personality have focused on temperament and character. attitudinal psyche have suggested that character and temperament are a reflection of how we feel. The study was designed to examine the relationship between temperament, depression and other factors. Through a factor analysis analysis of the SDS items the structural equation model was constructed to rate the relation between depression and temperament.

Although temperament and psychopathology are closely linked, the connection between psychopathology and temperament has not been proven conclusively. Researchers have suggested four theories for the relationship between temperament and psychopathology. These four theories include the common cause, the continuity explanation, the pathoplasty/exacerbation explanation, and the common cause/common cause.

Choleric adults are generally less patient and more attentive than other adults. They can be overbearing and may lack the ability to listen, which may cause them to be less patient. Cholerics might be able to tolerate tantrums and outbursts in adulthood.

Treatments

Treatments for temperaments aim at improving mental health. The temperament of a person may be due to many factors, such as low socioeconomic status, social pressure, and ethnicity. These factors can impact the personality of an individual and impact their emotional state. These variables could be connected to personality disorders, and comorbid conditions, as well as cognitive impairment. Negative beliefs about drugs and pregnancy are two other factors that can affect temperament.

Psychological behavioural therapy can be used to address temperament-related problems. It helps people learn how to deal with their emotions and overcome their negative reactions. Patients can also be prescribed certain medications like antidepressants or anticonvulsant mind-set stabilizers. Whatever the cause treatment for temperament may involve both psychotherapy and medication.

Treatments for temperaments could target specific personality traits for example, sociability and emotionality as well as activity level. These aspects can be used to design a specific treatment program. A shy person may experience less social anxiety than someone who is socially-affectionated.

The temperament of a person can affect their adherence to pharmacotherapeutic interventions. Scopus database was scanned by researchers to identify studies that found correlations between treatment adherence and the individual's affective temperament. People with a cyclothymic temperament may be less likely to follow the advice of a doctor and to consume food that is not healthy. This could result in an inability to adhere and could lead to the development of illnesses.

The course consists of six classes, which may be taken as individual courses or in a series. In each course, the student will be able to understand their temperament. The "Temperament" is a normal psychological expression of a person and is largely influenced by the inheritance of a family member and post-natal conditioning. Understanding your temperament can help you break free of the habits of mind-sets and behaviours.

Challenges

Temperaments may pose many challenges. Temperaments are closely related to physical characteristics. In some instances immune challenges can increase anxiety or the resulting temperaments. Furthermore, temperaments can impact the performance of a person in various tasks. Certain studies have also shown that temperaments can influence the performance of an individual in a Barnes maze. Participants were given temperament tests prior to taking the maze test to see whether their temperaments affected their performance. The assays included the Open Field Test, Novel Object Test and Elevated Plus Maze.

One theory suggests that temperamental differences may be due to genetic and reproductive variations. Certain cultures, including those of India and the Navajo tribes, place a high value on emotional restraint and a calm temperament. Harmony and emotional restraint are crucial to Indian and Chinese parents. In both instances temperance allows parents to interact with one another, which may be the key to successful parenting.

Temperament studies pose two major challenges: identifying the biological and genetic causes of temperaments as well as identifying the psychological aspects of temperaments. Other issues include assessing the individual temperaments of people and determining how they influence the individual's behavior. It can be difficult to determine the role of temperament in a child's individuality and nature.

Despite these issues the temperaments of children are generally stable. However, the context a child develops in and the "fit" between the child and their parent is essential. Children with temperaments that are difficult react poorly to abusive or negligent parenting. Children with normal temperaments are, however, responsive to the responsive parenting. However, negative parenting practices can also result in negative outcomes for children with temperaments that are more prone to a lack of adaptability or tolerance to frustration.
