Minecraft was used To Teach Children Molecular Chemistry

Minecraft was used to teach children molecular chemistry

The game of virtual world building Minecraft that is played by millions of kids all over the world could be used in schools to teach chemistry.

A group of students from Hull University created an educational version of the game. It allows players to explore molecular structures created specifically for them, and learn about chemistry.

Our goal is to involve young scientists in engaging and fun ways.

Minecraft players make use of building blocks to create landscapes and structures.

They are also encouraged to collect treasure and many other items.

'Fiendishly difficult'

Joel Mills, a Minecraft expert at the university as well as Dr Mark Lorch, a senior lecturer in biological chemical chemistry helped the students develop the project.

Dr Lorch stated that "Minecraft is an incredible tool for examining the structure of buildings and landscapes, and also anatomy."

"So why not molecules?" It was shown to a class of children yesterday, and there were many gasps and wonders.

"This is a great way to grab their attention. It is a really novel method of engaging the audience and delivering information to them."

Students have created many other fun things for children to discover and explore in addition the structures and molecules.

Dr. Lorch said: "You can just explore and read the info about the molecules. There are also many treasure chests scattered around with books, puzzles and other goodies.

"Some are easy to find, others are fiendishly difficult to find. If you can find them all , you'll likely have learned a lot of chemistry along the way."

Outreach

Dr Lorch also has a role in involving young people in science. She said: "If they see this information in a Minecraft environment and are shown how to access it in the future, they are more likely to visit the website to find it."

The Hull team is currently experimenting with the game, dubbed MolCraft in a variety of secondary schools in London as part of various university outreach initiatives.

But it can be utilized in elementary schools to teach fundamental science, such as how atoms form together to create molecules.

It is also available in Minecraft's educational library that includes versions for students and teachers.

This isn't the first time Minecraft has been used for engaging children with scientific topics.

A world has been designed to teach quantum physics, and numerous schools in Northern Ireland are using an adapted version to inspire creative writing and engage young people in urban planning.
