What are Things that Taste Like?

Alex: You've also worked on an open Marketplace map of Summer's base.



Max Brooks: Yeah! When you open the map, it's way after Summer and Guy have left and the mountain you're looking at isn't exactly what was in the book. Actually, that was a big challenge. I was at the halfway point of The Mountain when I finally settled down and began playing. The Nether had changed from top to bottom. But instead of getting angry I realized that this was probably the most important life lesson! When the world changes, you must adapt to it.



Alex: Like The Island, the book is incredibly thorough.



Max Brooks: Research has always been a key aspect of my life. I don't write as many books because I have to spend many years researching. With a game like Minecraft I live with the fear of people saying, "That would never happen!" So I played hundreds of hours of Minecraft, making sure the game's mechanics are reflected in the book. There are also certain things that just happen in Minecraft that you can't imagine on your own. My character in The Island shoots his final shot at a creeper, and then hits a bat that is hit by. That really happened when I was playing Minecraft!




Alex A lot of the fun of these books is the way they feel real.




Max Brooks :Yeah. And, with everything that I write, I'm trying to establish trust and build rapport with the reader. I want them to know that when they read one of my books they can trust me to lead them on journey through a place that I am familiar with - that I'm their tour guide.




Alex: I enjoyed your insight into what Minecraft smells like. That was an excellent insight Netherrack.

Max Brooks : I am aware that Sarah Peed, my editor, is a great friend and a wonderful person. She encouraged me to write the first book and asked me about the Island felt like. What are the tastes of things? How does the breeze feel on your skin? How does the grass feel under your feet? I would like the book to be an absorbing experience, and I was thinking netherrack would smell sulphurous. It should smell like farts. Yeah, I said it! Night Vision should taste like carrot soda. It should be tangy, bubbly and have a slight bite on the tongue. I wanted people to feel as if they were there.
