Minecraft player spends two years creating a virtual city by Zoe Kleinman Technology reporter, BBC News
17 October 2014
A Delaware student spent two years creating an imaginary world was named Titan City in Minecraft.
Titan City is comprised of 4.5 Million Minecraft building blocks. It also has 96 buildings.
Duncan Parcells claims it took the project two years to complete and he is able to devote up to five hours a week working on the project.
His first structure was a replica of the World Trade Center. It took 18 months to build.
The 19-year-old, however, says Titan City is not a realistic representation of New York.
"It's inspired by New York," he told the BBC.
"A majority of people believe that it's a sport for recreation, but it's not."
He first built the city using the Xbox 360 version, but the game has since been transferred to the PC version, which he claims offers more construction options.
Mr. Parcells plans to add an airport and an athletic stadium.
"I believe it's an outlet for energy and architecture," he said.
"Architecture has always been something that I have always loved. I am particularly happy with Victorian-style buildings that are less modern and more art deco.
"A majority of people stop by and want to stroll around and explore, or assist with the building. Many of them assist in helping construct roads.
While Titan City has been welcomed online with open arms, Mr Parcells declared that he's kept his virtual world separate from his real life.
"I've kept it a secret It's like an additional life that I'm not able to talk about but people are beginning to find out," he said.
"My parents believe it's cool. I'm sure they're happy I don't play it so much."
Microsoft recently agreed to buy Minecraft studio Mojang for $2.5bn (PS1.5bn).
The game registered its 100 millionth player in February 2014, its creator Markus Persson, aka Notch, announced on Twitter.
After an initial purchase of the game Minecraft is completely free to play but there are in-game purchases that can be purchased.
The game is set in a virtual environment made of cubes of different materials. Almost all of these are able to be used as building blocks and a few can be refined into usable raw materials (wood, iron, diamond etc.).
The game demands players to survive building shelters with blocks and turn raw materials and mixtures of them into useful items (swords and bows, armor and so on.) to fight the many monsters that are in the game.
