Minecraft creator on Microsoft deal: "It's about my mental health'



Shortly after it was announced that Microsoft was buying Minecraft Mojang developer for $2.5bn (PS1.5bn) The Swedish developer behind the title Markus Persson - known as Notch released his own personal statement on the deal. We have reproduced it in full below:



Mojang has left me.



I don't think of myself as an actual game developer. I make games for fun, and because I love games and I love to program however I don't create games with the intention of them becoming huge hit and I don't set out to make a difference in the world.



Minecraft certainly became a huge success, and people are telling me it has changed the way they play. It wasn't an accident. It's certainly pleasing and to slowly get put in the public spotlight is interesting.

A relatively long time ago, I made the choice to quit Minecraft development. Jens was the ideal person to take over leading the project, and I was eager to experiment with something new. Although I tried to expand it again at first, I was unsuccessful. But, since I decided to stick with small prototypes, intriguing problems have been solved, and I've had so much fun doing my work.



While I wasn't sure what I could do to make it to Mojang where the actual work was done, I was told that I was important for the culture, so I decided to remain.



A few weeks ago, I was suffering from a severe cold at home. The internet went wild with hate about me because of an EULA situation in which I was not in. I was confused. I didn't understand. I tweeted this frustration.



Later, I looked at the This is Phil Fish YouTube video and realized that I didn't feel the connection I thought I did with my fans. I have become an image. I do not want to be a symbol responsible for something huge that I don't understand and don't want to work on and that keeps coming back to me. I'm not an entrepreneur. I'm not a CEO. I'm a geeky programmer who enjoys sharing my thoughts on Twitter.



As soon as the deal is concluded, I will leave Mojang and return to Ludum Dares as well as small web-based experiments. I'll probably end any project that I accidentally create that is successful in gaining traction.



In light of the fact that the public image of me is already a bit skewed, I don't expect to get away from negative feedback by doing this however, at least at this point I don't feel the need to read them.



This is in direct contradiction to my public statements. I'm not sure of a response to that. I'm also aware that many of you saw me as a symbol for some perceived struggle. I'm not. I'm a human being and I'm right there with you.



You are my best friend. Every one of you. Thank you for turning Minecraft into what it is now, but there are too many of you, and I'm not able to be the sole person to be responsible for something this massive. It is Microsoft's property now in a certain sense. In a more broad sense, it's been owned by everyone for a long period of time and that won't change.



It's not about money. It's about my mental health.
