Tate Gallery teams up with Minecraft By Dougal Shaw Technology reporter
The Tate Gallery will exhibit some of its most renowned works in 3D in the virtual world of Minecraft. What is the best way to appreciate art?
Ever fancied stepping inside a painting, and taking a little bit of an exploration inside it?
The Tate is inviting people to clamber over its artworks and take a good look.
There will be no security guards on watch.
The first painting to undergo this digital, 3D transformation was Andre Derain’s 1906 painting The Pool of London and Christopher Nevinson's painting of New York City, Soul of the Soulless City (1920).
"Visitors will see a white cube which represents the Tate Gallery," explains Jane Burton, Creative Director of Tate Media.
"You walk in with the painting in your palm.

"What you can now do is walk up to the painting and plunge into it. This is where your adventure begins."

Visitors will have the chance to engage with the world of the painting.
To see Nevinson's cityscape from the train, take it. Stop for a bite to eat with the builders while they take a break from building towers.
Visitors need to beware of pirates in the Thames when they visit Derain's painting, and can play around with mixing explosive paint pigments.
"You are challenged to explore the world of activities and challenges that relate to the themes of the artwork.
Jane Burton, whose children introduced her to the power and potential of Minecraft, says, "It's art history adventure,"
Adam Clarke, a well-known Minecraft creator, first suggested that Minecraft exhibits be created.
He suggested the idea for Tate's IK Prize, which is given to an idea that utilizes digital technology to inspire people in the arts.
Tate used the talents of other famous Minecraft builders, like Featherblade, Featherblade, Dragnoz and Featherblade, to create the worlds inspired from the famous photographs.
However there are those who aren't convinced.
Perspective
These Minecraft creations will help younger audiences a better understanding of art in order to allow them to view original artworks in galleries. Rachel Campbell-Johnston, Times art critic, says it's like "seeing an old buddy".
The feeling of being recognized, "like seeing celebrities", is a powerful tool to inspire art appreciation and encourage viewers.
"But paradoxically, the Minecraft works themselves provide an enjoyable experience," she continues.
"It is more of an entertainment experience instead of a creative connection with the painting, as [Minecrafts's] 3D mapping replaces the real painting's illusionistic surfaces, doing the work for you."
Digital opening
You can download the two works of Derain and Nevinson beginning Monday
Players must pay to join the Minecraft community, but the maps available for download of Tate's images are free.
Six more 3D masterpieces are in the pipeline. Many will be watching closely to see how many people queue to attend Tate's Minecraft exhibition on Monday.
