The recall covers 629 devices that were sold in the United States.

This allows the placing of an medical feed tube. If a tube is inserted improperly, patients could experience damage to their vocal cords, lungs, or the trachea. The lungs fail, there is pneumothorax (collapsed lung tissue), perforation, (a hole in the esophagus or bowel wall) pneumonia, excessive fluid that is accumulating between the lungs (the chest cavity and lung tissue) are all among the injuries.

The Avanos warning is the second warning the FDA issued in 2022 regarding tube feeding through the stomach. In February, parents as well as healthcare professionals were advised by the FDA about the potential for strangulation of children who use tubes for feeding. Two cases of child strangulation with feeding tubes securing the necks of patients were reported before 2021.
