iLands is a no-cost game for iPhone and iPad that is available for iOS 4.3 or later. However, iLands Premium is available as an in-app purchase (US $3.99.) If you're not looking to pay $6.99 for Minecraft - Pocket Edition, then this is the game for you. You start with a new block world which you can build upon and customize how you want to.
The graphics are pretty good in comparison to Minecraft the Pocket Edition, but they could be much better. The D-pad is on the left and allows strafing and moving ahead and backwards. Moving around using the D-pad can be difficult at times. The sensitivity can take a bit of getting used to but it's manageable for the most part. The control on your right is for jumping up only and it works great. The experience of maneuvering the terrain was somewhat slow, especially when you had to leap over obstacles. Sometimes the touch targets wouldn't respond until I tapped repeatedly. For instance,when using the X to bust up grass, dirt or blocks, it will require more than two taps. The game frequently crashed while I was in the middle of creating and exploring my Solo world.
You're allocated the building materials that include grass, sand, and bricks. The steel skeleton blocks are unique to iLands because I had not seen anything like them in Minecraft - Pocket Edition. The steel skeleton blocks are amazing because you can construct a solid structure and still have a view of the surrounding area and daylight unlike building with solid blocks. I loved building with cobblestone to build houses and roads. The materials with locks can be unlocked by purchasing the full version. In this review, I only played the trial version.
If you're looking for the survival mode that is similar to Minecraft - Pocket Edition, you will not find it in the free version of iLands. I don't know if survival is available in the full-priced version. minecraft I usually play in creative mode all the time in Minecraft - Pocket Edition anyway, so I didn't find it a problem in iLands.
If you love building blocks in a virtual setting, iLands is a worthwhile free download. I'd love to know what the paid version of the game lets the user to do, apart from unlocking building materials. I loved building buildings and anything else my mind was able to imagine.
