Writing is a significant part of my professional output. I do not feel that I write enough. To encourage me to write more, I created an internal dashboard that had one number that represented the total number of words that I had sent to the Internet.
Kevin Kwok encouraged it to be shared.
It's hard to visualize the magnitude of that number.
The Harry Potter series has approximately 1,080,000 words in it.
Is this a good measurement to use?
Yes and No!

The actual metric I aim for is the product of the number of software people I've helped and the median concrete gain from the assistance.
This is influenced more by project selection (one essay continues to outperform the many years of my career) and also just getting up and working. I do not have a repeatable method for a successful project selection however the World of Warcraft player in me knows exactly where my buttons are. Give me a number and I'll make it go higher.
This is an optimistic number that could be increased, all other things being equal. Certain words are more appealing than others, some essays are more powerful than others, sometimes I engage in a flurry of conversation without purpose I can understand all those arguments, but if you told me that I had written 25k words or 200k words next year I'd know instantly whether it was an effective year or not.
What is included?
Essays on this site My newsletter (presently in off), Hacker News comments tweets, comments and tweets. There are a variety of "etc" so this number is sensitive to how many my script can collect. (Which makes the 7 significant numbers a bit of a falsehood, but the most important part for me is that I have the ability to make the number rise.)
Not included: One-to one emails (which could be worth at least one million words here) as well as any other items I don't have (which includes work for employers or clients).
How often is this updated?
Last update: 03/06/2020. I update this about every month. Although I have a script, it takes some effort from me and wall-clock time to execute.
