What is That What is It, and what's the Background on it?

You keep mentioning and linking to this Hololive and related stuff. I'm out. What's the issue and what's the background on it? A personal perspective can be helpful. I spend long hours alone at home at my desk, sometimes late at night, and I find that playing something on the other monitor can keep me from becoming even more distracted and spending my time on Twitter or other social media sites.



For several years, I was a loyal listener to many podcasts, including networks like This Week in Tech or The Incomparable. As we approached 2020 the majority of the podcasts I was listening to was turning unpleasantly politically. I'm not talking about technology or geek topics. The same stuff that had destroyed Twitter in 2018.



However, around the time, this came up in my suggestions on YouTube The only time Google has been able to get it right since around 2013.



It's only a 20 second clip but it was enough to make me wonder What is going on? and take a closer look. Then I realized that there's no escaping the rabbit hole.



This is Hololive:



Yes, there's many of them. (This is seven videos that were edited by an enthusiast. This is why some transitions aren't perfect.



In essence, Hololive is a 24-hour, international all-girl comedy channel that improvises. Unwoken, unpolitically correct and irreverent. Extremecraft They even have their own Bugs Bunny characters You can see her for a couple of seconds in the video. Her name is Usada Perkora. She has 1.8million YouTube users.



They sing, they dance - they have live concerts with full motion tracking and 3D models, they draw - at least two are successful commercial artists, they play an awful lot of Minecraft and don't take any shit from anyone.



The background of Hololive is also interesting. The parent company Cover Corp was working on an innovative AR device, that replaced expensive motion tracking with a standard iPhone and a clever program but they weren't having a lot of success making it into the market.



In 2017, two Japanese girls who were fresh out of high school contacted them and said they needed their own virtual spokesperson. One of them is Tokino Sora who has 900,000. The other is A-chan, who is the senior manager in charge of all activities within the company.



The pivot was a huge hit and Hololive has become essentially an investment bank. Their smaller channel and they have dozens with close to 300,000 subscribers, and the largest is close to 4 million.



Many people are sick of hypocritical woke nonsense and require entertainers who are sincere. They have enough distance to use 2D characters and stage names, and also a strict policy of privacy protection for their company which means they don't need any pretenses.



They don't make explicit political statements but in this benighted time, it is an important political declaration.



And beyond the official content and there's so much of it that is impossible to watch everything - there's an absolute avalanche of fan-made content, ranging from cute videos:

So, forget Hollywood Don't forget Netflix for a minute, or podcasts, I really don't need to. I'll be in the corner, juggling hedgehogs.

Okay, so she's somewhat of a ditz in certain areas. She can talk for up to four hours, every day and not have to repeat her own words. And she does that while simultaneously doing three other things that are a rare talent.
