Date palm

Researchers have discovered that the Methuselah date palm tree sprouted from an ancient seed, more than 2,000 years old. Elaine Solowey, director of the Arava Institute for Environmental Studies in Israel, was the first to germinate the seed. The seed was recovered from an excavation in Masada, Israel, and spent many years sitting in the researcher's drawer. Now, a new crop of date palms is ready for harvest.

The ancient seeds were soaked in water, with hormones added to promote germination, and planted in a quarantined area. Using radiocarbon dating, the researchers discovered that the seeds dated back at least 2000 years. Genetic analysis revealed that several of the ancient seeds came from female date palms that were pollinated by male date palms from different areas. These results suggest that ancient Judean people may have been practicing sophisticated plant breeding techniques. Because the seeds were larger than the modern varieties, researchers hope to recreate the ancient fruit by pollinating females with males.

In addition, the ancient date seeds had a greater percentage of introgression segments from the Greek species Phoenix theophrasti. This shows that the two species may not represent a discrete population, but they offer insight into the evolution of the crop. Using ancient germinated date palms as a genetic marker, future studies could reveal the presence of hybrids from the two ancient populations. These findings could also be applied to the modern date palm.

Heirloom tomato varieties

Heirloom tomato varieties are older, open-pollinated tomatoes. They have been around for decades and some are hard to find, as newer hybrids last longer in storage. While many of these varieties can still be purchased as plants, some are not. You'll have to grow these types from seed. In this article, we will review some of the characteristics of heirloom tomatoes. We'll also discuss the benefits of heirloom tomatoes.

One of the main benefits of heirloom tomatoes is the taste. Unlike hybrids, heirloom tomatoes are remarkably flavorful. Many heirloom varieties have been around for generations, and their flavor is second to none. Many commercial crops prize durability, but at the expense of flavor and nutrition. Hybrid tomato plants are cross-pollinated, and their purpose is to increase yield and disease resistance. They also produce uniformly-shaped fruit. Heirloom tomato plants are far superior to store-bought tomatoes, which tend to be uniform in color.

Some heirloom tomato varieties have colorful histories. One example is 'Radiator Charlie's Mortgage Lifter'. In the 1930s, Charlie Byles, who owned a radiator repair shop in West Virginia, crossed four of the largest tomatoes he could find. He sold these plants for a dollar each and eventually paid off his mortgage in six years. Another heirloom tomato is Cherokee Purple. In 1891, Craig LeHoullier received seeds from a neighbor.

Heirloom lupine

The Old Seed Heirloom Lupine is a showy, fragrant wildflower native to the United States. Its dramatic stacks of colorful blossoms make it an excellent backdrop for a flower garden. This perennial grows to around 3 feet tall and will make a stunning backdrop. To grow this plant, follow the instructions on the packet. It is easy to grow, and requires a well-drained soil that is on the acidic side.

To grow lupine, start the seeds in fall or spring in a sunny location. Prepare soil by loosening it to a depth twice as deep as the seed. Then soak the seeds overnight in lukewarm water. They should be planted two months before the last frost date. If you haven't started your seeds indoors, you can direct sow them. It is best to direct-sow the seeds for greater flowering.

This heirloom plant will produce a dense, low-maintenance plant with showy blue blooms. It will bloom from spring into fall and will be a great choice for cutting. Old Seed Heirloom Lupine seeds can be sown directly into the garden after they are scarified. Once the plants are mature, water them once a week. Once established, they will use water naturally.
