To put Minecraft's popularity in context, Epic announced in August 2018 that Fortnite had 78.3 million monthly players. In addition Roblox, Roblox, an MMO game of creation Roblox had reached 100 million monthly active players in August 2019.
Minecraft continues to receive regular updates, and Minecraft was added to Xbox Game Pass in April 2019; this no doubt helped expand the footprint of the popular game even further.
Minecraft boss Helen Chiang told Business Insider that Minecraft is a game that people enjoy coming back to over and over. Chiang said that while it might not be the most popular, there are plenty of excellent games available. But, they enjoy returning to Minecraft.
Microsoft acquired the Minecraft franchise and the developer Mojang in 2014 for $2.5 billion. The creator of the franchise Markus "Notch” Persson has quit. He paid $70 million for the Beverly Hills mansion. This was more than Jay-Z and Beyonce.
Looking ahead looking ahead, looking ahead, a Minecraft movie is in the works. Writer Allison Schroeder (Hidden Figures, Frozen 2) was hired to pen the latest draft of the screenplay The Minecraft movie is scheduled to be released in cinemas on March 4 2022. There is no word yet on whether it will be animation or live action or a hybrid, and we don't know who may star in it. At one time, Steve Carell was apparently connected to the project, however it's unclear if this is still the case.
