What Is Sattakking?
"Sattakking" is the word used in South India for a ritual performed by the daughters of the Hindu gods. This is a ceremony which involves female deities who are worshipped in every region of India. It involves dancing and music. The sattaking of the daughters is a part of this process and is considered an auspicious ceremony. The attacking of the daksana (corpse) is also referred to attacking.

There are many variations of attacking. However, in most of these variations sattakkining is accompanied by some rituals. The most common variations of attacking are the following: sattakkuning(ph), sattakkurning(ph), sattakkurni(ph), sattakkurna(ph), and sattakkurnas(ph) which can vary in complexity from one region to another. In some regions there is a sattakkundra(ph), which is similar to sattakkinning(ph). This sattakkundra is generally placed at the entrance of the temple or any other important place in the temple where there is a buildup of devotees.

This sattakking rituals are believed to purify the devotees as well as to ward away evil spirits. satta king attacking dance which takes place during sattakking has been called sattakkik Dance. This sattakking dance has its origin in the state of Kerala in Southern India. This dance is performed with the body movements of elephants. elephants are believed to be a powerful force in nature and hence sattakking dance is performed with their body movements. These attacking rituals were originally conducted to get good luck for the new year. It was also believed that if a particular number of elephants took part in the attacking rituals then that particular year would be prosperous. However, nowadays these sattakking rituals are done only for entertainment purposes and no attention is paid to the positive influence it will have on the new year. However, some of the temples and especially the senior sattaras still perform the attacking dance for entertainment purposes.


The attacking rituals have now become a mainstay in the Indian religion. This sattaking dance has gained popularity among the people of all age groups. In some parts of the country, these sattakking rituals are held on every day of the year except for the Andhra Pradesh and the Telangana states. But in almost all the regions, attacking is performed on the full moon of the new year. Many people believe that the attacking rituals have a direct relation with the good fortunes.

Nowadays, a sattakking dance may include different types of dance styles like the Kathak dance and even the polka dance. However, the basic dance style is the sattakaar.
