Families who Game together Stay Together

My dad is a fan of fishing, hunting, and fighting fires. I enjoy reading, philosophy and not putting myself through too much. But while we might not have much in common, we do play a lot of games together. Shooters for military are the most common because he is bored with many of the slow-moving games that are story-driven. I usually play on my own. I was not going to follow his example at the fire station and he didn't want to read Kant with me. Instead, we have bonded over virtual battlefields.

This isn't something unique to me or my family. Steven struggles to find the common ground with his children, just as my father. One of his daughters is dancer. The other daughter is in band. But as the girls have gotten older, playing video games has brought the whole family closer together.

"I've been an avid gamer since my time in college and my daughters have just began to pick up on it," he told me. MINECRAFT SERVERS "About six to seven years ago, I purchased my oldest daughter an electronic device. She and I started playing games against one another and against each other. "I met Steven at QuakeCon in Dallas, TX, where he and his daughters Nicole and Maya were getting ready to play a game of Torchlight 2. "We used to have a room [at home] that all the computers were," Steven told me when I asked if they played a lot of games as a family. "We'd sit and just play for hours and hours."

They play many games together, including Borderlands and The Secret World, though Steven informed me that he as well as Maya, who is 11 years old, have a love for Minecraft. It is clear that Minecraft is like a modern day Lego set they craft and create together. "I actually am a fan of Minecraft. We'll connect to a server and build things together , and things."

It's not just about games. Theirs is also a house of technology. One Christmas, Nicole's relatives have all come together to purchase her a component for the new computer she and her father built together. They learned how to put in hardware in the same way that children learn to change a tire on the car. Steven stated, "I try and teach students, "This is how to go about building a computer,' to enable them to do things by themselves." "I tried to make them as self-sufficient as they could be."

While you may enjoy spending time with your family at home, it doesn't ensure a quality family time. Sometimes life gets in the way and you need a vacation in order to bond. But where do you go when exploring magic kingdoms (albeit in a virtual way) is part of your regular family bonding?

Steven's family's answer was QuakeCon which is held in their home state. Marketed as the world's largest free LAN event, the Bethesda-hosted event draws thousands of people to Dallas. "It makes us focus on doing this together," Steven said. "And it's just fun to go out and look around and see what other people are playing and see what new things are being released ... It's something that we all enjoy doing, and I figured it's here locally, and it's not that expensive to travel and do it, so why not?"

They don't make the trek by themselves. Just as some families go camping with friends, QuakeCon tends to be a group activity. Steven and his daughters went along with their friends and Nicole's best friend Sean. "His dad and I have become good friends," Steven said. "I would invite him and Sean over to our house to host mini LAN parties in our house and invite three or four of my friends, and my daughters would also join in and we'd have a great time at the house." For the past couple of years, QuakeCon has been another thing to do together.

"I don't know if it was the family that was sitting down to dinner and saying, "We should go!" Sean 17, who is 17 said to me. While his mother, father, and 7-year-old brother, Reid were out of town, Sean was still playing in the Bring Your Own Computer area of QuakeCon. "It was more my father and I saying, 'This is kick A,' and the two others were carried along. We're all friends with Steven's family , and we all play together, so they suggested that we all go.

For those people who want to book a hotel for a video game-filled weekend is one of the most natural activities in the world. And why shouldn't it be? Anybody under the age of 18 today is born into a society where video games are an everyday thing for millions of people. It's been a while since video games were something that parents understood. Instead, they're something that adults love with their children.

Steven's oldest daughter will be going to college close to home, but he hopes that QuakeCon, at least, will be a reason for the entire family to gather and play games for the weekend, even as the girls get older and move out. He added, "I have at least six to seven years with my youngest." "But we'll be trying to go on for as long as is possible."

It isn't a matter of what they do, as long as they're enjoying their time together. "The main reason we're here is for some time off. To just sit and play video games and sort of hang out. "Daddy daughter time." Britton Peele is a freelance writer based in Texas. His work has been published in GameSpot, GamesRadar, and The Dallas Morning News.
