Do you own a Nintendo Switch and occasionally enjoy playing mobile games on your iPhone or iPad? You'll be glad to know that the iOS 16 update will allow you to connect Nintendo Joy-Con controllers directly to your Apple device. It's one of the five hidden features in the latest operating system.

In the last few years, game-makers have added more complex gameplay to mobile games. Services like Xbox Cloud Gaming and GeForce Now allow you to play games such as Call of Duty, Fortnite and Apex Legends, which aren't easy to control on your mobile device. Your tablet or phone has a smaller screen than your TV, which means less space for visuals and controls, and so gaming controllers might be required.
Apple does not have to be the first company to use third-party controllers. At present you can pair the DualSense from PlayStation and the wireless controller for Xbox to your iPhone or iPad. Additionally, other controllers such as the Backbone One and the Razer Kishi, are made specifically for mobile gaming.

If you already have a Nintendo Switch, there's no need to buy an external gaming controller. You've got two attached to the two sides of your console. The best part is, pairing the Joy-Cons to your iPhone or iPad takes just two seconds.
This only works on iOS 16, which is currently in the public beta. Here's how to download it now.
How to pair your JoyCons with your iPhone or iPad If they are not charged you can connect them to your Nintendo Switch while it is charging in the dock. Once your Joy-Cons are charged, remove them from your console.
1. Press and hold the black pairing button at the top of the Joy-Con until you see the green light blinking between the two. This will put the Joy-Con in pairing mode.
2. Then, go to Settings >Bluetooth on your iPhone/iPad.
3. Scroll down to locate your Joy-Con in Other Devices. You'll find either Joy-Con (L) or Joy-Con (R), depending on the Joy-Con you're currently pairing.
4. To pair it, simply tap the Joy-Con option. If needed repeat the process using the other Joy-Con.

After your Joy-Cons are connected, you can go into any game that has third-party controllers, like Minecraft, Among Us and Call of Duty, and play using your newly paired Joy-Cons. Certain mobile games do not work with both Joy-Con controllers simultaneously, which means you may only require one.
To disconnect the Joy-Cons go to Settings >Bluetooth, tap the blue icon for information, and then hit Disconnect.
