Avanos Medical (U.S. Avanos Medical Avanos Medical Food & Drug Administration) has announced it will recall Cortrak*2's Enteral Access System. The recall was announced due to patient injuries and deaths caused by misplaced nasoenteric/nasoga tubes. The recall includes 629 devices sold in the United States.
Avanos Medical feeding tube Avanos markets the Cortrak*2 enteral access device for its visualisation of the patient's small bowel and stomach, which aids in placing a medical feeding tube. When a tube is placed incorrectly, it could cause harm to the vocal cords, the lungs and trachea. According to the Avanos Medical recall communication there were 60 injuries and 23 deaths of patients since 2015 related to misplacement of feeding tubes for the nasogastric system using the CORTRAK* 2 Enteral Access System. The causes of the injuries are respiratory failure, pneumothorax and perforation. These are all types of lung collapse.

Avanos is the second caution issued by the FDA has issued in relation to feeding tubes that are intra-oral. The FDA issued a caution to parents and healthcare providers about strangulation risk in the event that feeding tubes are being used by children. Two deaths resulting from strangulation of children was reported in 2021 as a result of a tube that was tied around the neck of a child.
