There will be an Appeals Process

The new system lets players communicate chat messages in multiplayer games, but the community is concerned about the ramifications.

Mojang's community manager has stated that the company will not alter its controversial player reporting feature . He also demanded the end of harassment of Mojang employees.

Posting on Reddit, MojangMeesh clarified that, while the company values player feedback, it won't necessarily "change the design principles Mojang Studios adheres to-this includes the upcoming reporting system". They also asked players who are upset to stop "following Mojang employees around here on Reddit" to pester them on unrelated threads. The post received close to 2000 downvotes at time of writing.

Minecraft players have been up in arms about the new player report system since it was announced a month ago and was then implemented as part of yesterday's 1.19.1 update. It allows players on private and Mojang-hosted servers to report inappropriate messages in chat to be reviewed by Mojang investigators, potentially resulting in suspensions and bans for players that violate Minecraft's rules for community participation, even on servers hosted by self-hosted players. Some players are concerned that the system could lead to bans on players for messages that have been taken out of context and more generally, it gives Microsoft too much powers to control the content on its platform.

I don't think their argument is without merit even if some players are acting badly about it. It's hard to imagine a world which this system doesn’t ban anyone for making jokes with friends. Although there may be appeals, it's true that there are a lot of misconceptions about the way the system operates. Read any thread on the matter and it won't take long before you see those who complain about having their private server's chat 'monitored by Microsoft or concerned that they'll be banned from the site for cursing. Neither of these is possible, according to Mojang's FAQ on the reporting system.

This is the area where Mojang is stuck. A thread from Stuart Duncan-who runs an autism-friendly Minecraft server for children with autism-reveals the awful things Minecraft plays host to on a regular basis. Arttalk.Net Duncan highlights studies and reports from the ADL as well as the BBC and other sources that tell stories of racists and predators using Minecraft in a way that is abominable. It seems crucial to provide tools to fight this kind of behavior. While it's true that 'think of the child" and other scary stories are often used to justify repressive policies in real life and a tool that lets users report chat messages that aren't legitimate in Minecraft doesn't really seem like the tip of a severe wedge.

When you say "no one ever asked" for this, "the entire community hates this" or "no-one wants this", please stop trying to be an advocate for everyone. "If you're worried about the potential for exploits it's fine. You're not alone. It's not perfect, but real people can be saved by it. July 27 2022

In other Minecraft news, Mojang recently announced that the game won't be featuring NFTs because they are incompatible with the "values of inclusion in the creative process". At least that move only was able to get an enthusiastic response from the player base however there's no confirmation yet as to what that AI they developed to play Minecraft thinks about it.

One of Josh's first memories is of playing Quake 2 on the family computer at a time when he was too young to be playing that and he's been game-brained ever since. His writing has been featured in Vice and Fanbyte as well as the Financial Times. He is able to play virtually every game, and has written about everything, from visual novels toAssassin's Creed. His biggest passions are CRPGs and immersive games. He believes you're far too mean about Deus Ex: Invisible War.
