'Minecraft Earth' will Shut down On June 30th

Just a little over a decade after launching Minecraft Earth in the US, Microsoft announced this week it will shut down the game later this year. Minecraft Earth players will have until June 30, 2021 to play the augmented reality game. Minecraft servers It's no longer available to download from app marketplaces and it's not available for purchase.



Developer Mojang Studios attributed the shutdown to the coronavirus pandemic and all the changes to everyday life that it has brought. "Minecraft Earth was designed around playing with no restrictions and in a collaborative manner which have become near impossible in the current global situation," the studio said. Mojang as well as Niantic's Pokemon Go, had modified the game to make it more accessible at home. It's clear that these tweaks were not enough.

- Minecraft (@Minecraft), January 5 2021. But there is a silver lining to today's news: Mojang plans on presenting Minecraft Earth in style. The studio has released one final update to Minecraft Earth, which it claims contains changes "to ensure that your time on Minecraft Earth as enjoyable as it can be." Alongside other changes that the update removes of real-money transactions and dramatically reduces the time it'll take for players to craft and build things within the game. The update also gives players the chance to look at all the content that Mojang was working on prior to today's announcement. "We believe these changes will allow players to explore, create and build more - while staying secure inside," the studio said.



Microsoft will erase player data on July 1 after June 30th is finished. You'll be rewarded with a token if you make a purchase in Minecraft Earth during the game's duration. This token will enable you to download the Bedrock version of Minecraft on your phone. More information about the shut-down on the Minecraft website.



It's a disappointing end for Minecraft Earth for Microsoft. The company had high expectations for the game when it was first showcased at WWDC 2019. It's not a great indication for consumers using AR applications in the near future that Minecraft Earth was unable to outlast the epidemic with all the resources Microsoft has.



Mojang has stated that they will always be grateful for the amazing talent of the Minecraft community. "This was not an easy decision. We're doing everything to ensure that you get the most value from Minecraft Earth before it goes dark."
