Once again Retro Games are going on sale. Prices are soaring up to the hundreds of thousands of dollars! Speculators are driving up the prices, but small shops are keeping them alive! Read on to find out more. Listed below are some tips to help you take advantage of the Retro Sales. Remember, the best way to find great bargains is to shop around. There are some great sales to be had this week. We've listed some of the best ones.
Retro games are on sale once again
Many people are returning to classic video games after a long absence. Not only are they cheaper to buy and easy to play, but many of us still have our childhood consoles lying around. Some companies have even made retro-style consoles with classic games. While the latest games are often more expensive and require subscriptions, retro games still offer a nostalgic and fun way to pass the time. It's easy to find a retro game for a cheap price on eBay or at a vintage store.
Some of us have fond memories of playing retro games when we were young, but our tastes have evolved since then. Some of us prefer the blocky, three-dimensional graphics of the PlayStation 1 while others prefer the simplicity of the Game Boy Advance, which has enhanced versions of classic SNES games. There are many reasons why gamers turn to retro games. One reason is that we no longer have the money to purchase the latest gaming consoles.
Prices have reached hundreds of thousands of US dollars
Rare and vintage video games are gaining in value as collector's items. Commodore 64, the company's first home computer, is currently selling for $1,200 for a mint condition. Similarly, vinyl records are becoming a hot commodity as well, selling for hundreds of thousands of dollars. In fact, Jack White recently purchased an Elvis Presley record for $300,000.
The market for retro games has grown tremendously in recent years, and prices have followed suit. Some common Nintendo 64 games have fetched upwards of $70 for cartridges. A decade ago, those same games were only a few dollars each. Meanwhile, some more rare titles have been demanding thousands of dollars for decades. For example, there were several examples of Super Mario Bros., which was released in 1985. The price was $2 million on collectibles website Rally. It's likely that a few more SNES games may be hidden gems in the midst of the current craze.
Speculators are driving up prices
The retro video game market has been on the rise recently. Prices have soared from under $30,000 to more than $2 million, according to one recent report. The rise in housing prices has been blamed on speculators, but it's also a reflection of multiple interests. Auction houses make a percentage of the sale, while the company in charge of certifying the state of conservation is a key factor in the market's prices.
The price-to-rent ratio is a fundamental barometer of speculative bubbles. A high ratio suggests that buyers are confident that their home's value is greater than the rental price and that prices will continue to rise. The graph below shows the price-to-rent ratio in major US metro areas. While Vancouver and Toronto show the most pronounced price bubbles, Seattle has a steady rising ratio and remains below the peak seen in 2006-2007.
Small shops are keeping them alive
In the age of digital games and online shopping, small shops are thriving in the retro market. Josh Hamblin, owner of the Side Quest Game Store in Portland, Oregon, hasn't worried about the competition from the big boys. He's managed to make a profit from selling retro games from the 90s in a storefront, and he's now able to leave his day job as a car salesman to devote more time to his new business.
