How is Global Warming Affecting the Winter Olympics?

The prelude to the Winter Olympic Games was held in the year 1901, five years after the first Summer Olympic Games in 1896. This cold weather event, originally referred to the Nordic Games, was held in Sweden initially. It quickly became a popular event that was moved from country to country. The 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia attracted millions of viewers, including more than half of the population of the United States. However, the Winter Olympics might not be in an area that is warm enough to host them soon.

Daniel Scott, a University of Waterloo geography professor, has assembled climate data from previous Winter Games. He then applied climate change models to this historical information. Scott along with other researchers have predicted that nine of the previous Winter Games locations won't be cold enough to host the competition in 2050. Scott's team used increasing global greenhouse gas emissions projections to forecast an increase of 4 degrees Fahrenheit (2.2 degrees Celsius) by 2050. This model would show that Chamonix, France (the site of the first Olympic Winter Games in 1924), would see an increase of 5.4°F (3°C) by 2050. The snowfall and temperature range are not predictable enough to be certain that it will host the Winter Games.

A warming climate could affect not only the future Winter Olympics, but athletes' abilities to train. For instance the United States is expected to have half the duration of the snowboard and ski seasons due to the warm weather. This is predicted to happen by 2050. The current length of the ski and snowboard season will be reduced by 80 percent in 2090.

Now That's Interesting Ski resorts have been enhancing natural snow supply with artificial snow for years however this isn't a viable option when the air isn't cold enough to convert water into snow. Gaming This could mean that several cities hosting the games could not be able to host the Winter Olympics.
