Epic Games founder and CEO Tim Sweeney says that Epic Games will not limit the sale or distribution of games featuring NFTs. Sweeney's comments follow an announcement by Minecraft developer Mojang which laid out its stance not to permit blockchain technologies or NFTs in Minecraft.
After Mojang's announcement, a fan reached out to Sweeney on Twitter to enquire whether Epic Games would take a similar stance, however Sweeney responded in the negative.
He says that developers should be able to decide how to build their games and that you can decide whether or not you want to play them. "I believe stores and operating system makers shouldn't interfere by forcing their opinions on others. We won't.
Sweeney's comments were responded to by a different user who wanted to know how this differs from Epic Games its policy against discriminatory and hateful content. Sweeney stated that the difference is due to "editorial and brand judgements" and believes Epic decides "to draw the line at acceptable to mainstream norms."
Some users on the PC gaming subreddit have expressed displeasure with Sweeney's position, pointing out that the Epic CEO has previously spoken out strongly against NFTs. Sweeney shared a public copy of his September 2021 email response in a tweet response. Minecraft-server.co It stated that "We aren't tackling NFTs since the entire field is caught in a complex mix of frauds and intriguing decentralised tech foundations as well as scams."
Sweeney has now stated that he believes that Epic Game store developers should have the option of pursuing such integrations, but the statement isn't ambiguous. In a tweet that followed, Sweeney explained that Cryptography is complex.
