Minecraft 'loophole' Library Of Banned Journalism

Minecraft 'loophole' library of banned journalism

Published 13 March 2020

It began as a game in a discussion forum online, and turned into the best-selling video game of all time However, now Minecraft is being used for something even its creator would not have dreamt of.

The hub of free speech has taken on the legendary game of putting Lego-like blocks with more than 145,000,000 players every month, and transformed into a symbol.

To host the articles of journalists who were censored online A virtual library was carefully designed.

You will find the work of Jamal Khashoggi (the journalist who was murdered by Saudi agents in 2018) in addition to a variety of other books in the library.

Minecraft declined to make a comment.

The project was started by Reporters Without Borders which aims to protect the right to information throughout the globe. The Minecraft library was also created by Blockworks design studio.

Christian Mihr, the executive director of Reporters Without Borders Germany, said that Minecraft was a good project since he doesn't think it poses an issue for governments that control their media.

"We have chosen Minecraft because of its reach," he said. "It is accessible in every nation. The game is not censored as other games believed to be political.

"There are large communities in each of the countries featured, that's why the idea came up - it is an avenue for censorship."

He explained that the authors were selected to represent the countries in which press freedom was restricted, so that people from those communities would be able to access their work.

He also clarified that permissions were sought prior to publishing in the library.

"We did not include any content in the library without the permission of the author themselves - if they're alive.

"In the Jamal Khashoggi case we talked to family members - with regard to the safety of those who have passed away and the safety of their families."

Nick Feamster, Neubauer Professor of Computer Science, at the University of Chicago, said that the library could defeat the censors but was concerned about the reaction of governments.

"It's an interesting concept," he said, "But I think there are still some problems. The government will be aware of this as the articles are posted all over the internet. It won't be foolproof against a determined enemy.

He claimed that the strength of the library came from its use of entanglement mixing the censored content with the game of video in the eyes of censors.

"By linking these two things you make them share content," he said. "You cannot block this one without the other."

Helmi Noman who is a Research Affiliate at the Berkman Klein Centre for Internet & Society, stated that he thought the library would have a small population.

He stated that "censored content is dynamic and varied" and that users prefer methods that don't pre-select or compartmentalise content in particular areas online.

"Any approach that doesn't create a seamless and secure browsing experience of the entire web, social media and direct messaging apps will likely have a limited chance of success."

The server is able to accommodate up to 100 concurrent users, however it was often unavailable due to the large number of users trying to connect simultaneously. It has been visited by 3,889 users from 75 countries, and downloaded more than 7000 times.

After two hours of experimenting after two hours of trying, the BBC was able to access the virtual library and ask its patrons what they thought about it.

SoulfulGenie said that they believed it needed more books and an area on North Korea. Another user described it as "ingenious" and said that the library could be downloaded and then reuploaded by other users. "It is easy to duplicate and, therefore, difficult to destroy."

In contrast, other players focused on the look of the library and ReduxPL commenting that it "looks amazing indeed".

The design of the Blockworks library required 24 people, drawn from 16 countries, approximately 250 hours to complete.

James Delaney, Managing Director of the design company told the BBC that the goal was to create a classical design that was "on the edge of fantasy".

He said it was feasible as a building, but is exceeding the limits of what is possible.

"We picked a design that is that is in the neoclassical style. It's similar to things like the British Museum and public libraries in New York."

Outside of these influences, he said Minecraft was improvisational at its core So the creators did not have to adhere to established patterns.

"With many people working on the same project," he said, "people see each others' work and have to respond in real time. It's a reactive method of working that can alter the appearance of the project.

"The style is intended to symbolize power and authority. We wanted to flip that around.

"It's not a representation of the power of the government or the regime. It's representing freedom of expression."
