Minecraft is definitely available for Mac! This can be seen by visiting the Minecraft download page. Under the heading of "Desktop" selection, choose "Mac".
Although there are some differences in the version of Minecraft for the iPad and desktop, the essence of the game remains the same. Multiplayer is available in the desktop version.
It is important to note that your grandson's account will require a Minecraft account to access the desktop version (I'm not certain what exactly Pocket Edition works, nor if you are able to use the same account information for both versions).
He would like to play the same multiplayer game on the iMAC

-- Minecraft (the Java version) that runs on Windows 10 (or older versions of Windows, or on Macs) is not "cross-platform". It runs on PC's only. - Win10 ("Minecraft: Windows 10 Beta Edition") is "cross-platform". It can be used on PCs, tablets, and smartphones that runs Windows 10. Win10 is compatible with PE. SERVERS PE runs on Android and iOS tablets and smartphones.
Consoles, just like the Java version, are distinct creatures that can only be played with the consoles. Xbox (and PS4, Wii U), can't play other versions due to different dimensions of the world, etc. Xbox 360's aren't compatible with Xbox Ones. Until, and unless, the (newer) consoles can play in infinite worlds they can't play with any other editions.
The multiplayer will be distinct (independent of the Pocket Edition). Pocket Edition players will not be able to join people who play on Macs - making the multiplayer completely distinct.
