Snapchat could be the most popular app for self-destructing selfies, but there's still one small problem CEO Evan Spiegel doesn't seem to have locked up yet How is it going to earn money? In-app purchases? Location-centric stories? The Wall Street Journal has recently suggested a new possibility however, with an interesting twist: Snapchat Discovery, a startup that will provide news and ads to its users, is being launched by the company.
Yeah, really. Running ads seem like an obvious choice, but disappearing news is a fascinating variation on the simple Snapchat formula. The Journal reports that the company is in talks with at least 12 content providers (including the Daily Mail's Mail Online, for all your trashy gossip needs) to bring articles and video news to the service, which could be launched in November of this year. This is likely because it's not the Snapchat we know.
The app first came out three years ago, and was immediately slammed -- whether accurately or not as an app for scurrilous and sexy sexting. Along the way, though Snapchat's users increased beyond the ranks of young and bored to the point that parents of original users were taking advantage of it. How can a startup continue to grow even when its primary audience is changing drastically? Sexting By doing exactly what Snapchat is doing right now by giving us a variety of reasons to use it. The question of whether or not this insane plan actually works is a totally different story however, we won't be waiting for too long to see how this will turn out.
