With The Loves of Your Life, former The Walkmen frontman Hamilton Leithauser expands his scope in a searching spirit, satiating his hunger for connection with the stories of others. Married duo Alaina Moore and Patrick Riley, better known as Tennis, have recently endured one of the most difficult stages of their life, but found solace in each other throughout. Generally when people think of ’80s music, the first artists that pop into their heads might be Michael Jackson, Cyndi Lauper, Madonna, Prince, Duran Duran, a-ha and other staples of MTV and the Top 40. There’s no question that it was a golden age for pop music, although some of the quintessential hits of the ’80s have aged better than others. Now, a few decades after the golden age of ’90s indie rock, that’s not so much the case. The term “alternative” didn’t really become prominent until the very end of the ’80s, and into the early ’90s. But like all musical decades, there is another layer of music that by and large didn’t fit neatly into Top 40 playlists (at least in the US). There is necessarily and unavoidably a degree of subjectivity in not only selecting which songs to include and ranking them but also determining which songs can be considered alternative in the first place. There are songs that hit the top of the singles chart in the UK or elsewhere in the world - the Boomtown Rats’ 1979 classic “I Don’t Like Mondays”, for example, the Jam’s “A Town Called Malice”, or David Bowie’s “Ashes to Ashes” - which had zero chance of ever becoming a mainstream hit in America. It seems Hall realized yelps and screams don’t necessarily attract the most attention; he now recognizes that by being even more vulnerable than ever before, he’s capable of producing his finest songwriting yet. The deep multi-tracked vocals sung in a deadpan baritone exude a sense of menace, repeating “If you wanna ride, don’t ride the white horse” with the air of someone speaking from experience, and recommending instead to “ride the white pony”, evidently suggesting cocaine is preferable to heroin. Natalie Merchant’s glimmery vocals skate above the lean and insistent groove, with restrained organ, a lyrical bass, and bright lines of guitar. Tracy Tracy’s spritely vocals glide beautifully above the chugging guitars and locomotive drums. As it winds to its harrowing conclusion, the guitars flash like sirens in the wake of yet another shooting as they fade to black.

Instead of aiming to melt the brains of tens of thousands of twenty-somethings in a field on psychedelics (though this likely still will, let’s be honest), Parker instead turns his eye toward dancehalls, replacing fuzzy guitars and impressive percussion with bouncy piano and dance-y synths. Now, though, as her star is rising, Rose has turned that critical eye inward. Rose pithily skewered the objectification women must put up with when they enter the limelight and further criticizes the music industry in the accompanying video. On the flip side, women lost almost all legal rights and slavery was reintroduced in French colonies. Their half-hearted performance brought to mind the women in the background of Robert Palmer videos, who serve as ornamentation at best. He’s such a changed man that he even admits to being unable to identify with his old records: “There’s no use trying to relate to that old song,” he croons at the beginning of “Tomorrow’s Dust.” And will The Slow Rush blow your mind? 목포출장안마 Dan Bejar’s songs often sound like part of the soundtrack to a movie that exists only in his mind. Written about real individuals, some old friends and others strangers, the songs are as manifold as the human lives they encapsulate, with Leithauser often stepping aside to speak in his subjects’ own words. Many younger music fans in particular consider ’80s music irredeemably cheesy, and in many cases they are correct. Their biblical stories are often beset by adversity, charitable works or sinister intent. Eight years later, things are wildly different. These same skeptics find fault in the historical data used to graph things like glacial loss and hurricane frequency. This isn’t quite the little red Corvette going much too fast in Prince’s classic, but the Primitives certainly dip their toes in the same metaphoric territory, although “Crash” could have a broader variety of meanings. Written, recorded, produced and mixed in Leithauser’s cramped, DIY New York City studio The Struggle Hut, the album achieves a powerful sense of place, capturing the city and its innumerable narratives-NYC is well-trod creative territory, to say the least, and could have easily made for a mundane effort in the hands of a lesser songwriter. Anybody who has ever struggled with depression will understand when Merchant sings, “it is such a long time since my better days / I say my prayers nightly this will pass away”. Each time we publish a list of indie rock albums, we’re once again met with the question of what actually defines an indie rock album. Indie rock is an ever-evolving genre spanning bedroom recordings and Jack Antonoff-produced powerhouses. In the case of our present moment, the year’s best indie rock albums are a healthy mix of extremely-indie albums, higher profile events and everything in between.
