Dundee Pupils Redesign City Waterfront Using Minecraft

Dundee students redesign the city's waterfront using Minecraft

5 June 2015

Dundee school students have created their plans for the future of the city's waterfront, through the medium of Minecraft.

Primary school students have used the game for several months to plan for the region which is currently undergoing the PS1bn renewal.

Dundee City Council and University of Dundee led the project.

The design of the plans was taken into consideration along with the need to support tourism education and job creation.

In addition to the Minecraft Youth Camp that involves primary 6 and 7 pupils from across the city Students from nine secondary schools have taken part in the same Minecraft Youth Camp, funded by the university and TAYplan.

Students worked in groups using Playstation and XBox consoles. They were connected to whiteboards in classrooms , and made use of them to imagine and build their visions of the city’s waterfront.

'Hugely enthusiastic'

Derek Robertson of Dundee University's school of education said that the game was an "huge phenomenon" which engaged children.

He added that "We must understand the digital spaces children use and how they impact their learning."

"If we want to engage children in topics like design and the environment then games and applications like this are a great tool.

"The children we've been working with over the past few months have been extremely enthusiastic and have created some really great work. Some of it might be a challenge for the city planners but of course that is the wonder of Minecraft that they can make anything."

Mr Robertson was recently invited along with 49 other teachers from all over the world to participate in an Minecraft Educators Summit in Los Angeles, to discuss how Minecraft can be best used in formal and informal learning.
