Coronavirus: Leicester Church Uses Minecraft to Teach Bible to Teens

Coronavirus: Leicester church uses Minecraft to teach Bible to teens

17 May 2020

A church has turned to Minecraft to teach its children about Christianity during the lockdown.

The server has been used to recreate Leicester's St John the Baptist Church so that the youth club can have a place for Bible lessons.

Josh Young, the organizer, stated that it was an opportunity to meet young people "whereever they are" and engage with them in a space that is familiar.

Virtual reality means that they have also been able creative with their lessons.

Mr Young for instance, created an underwater whale to teach them about Jonah's story. He also challenged the teenagers to build boats to find out more about Jesus who calmed the storm.

The 27-year-old youth worker added, "Having a community of young people is crucial and that's why I wanted to continue in the lockdown."

"They can't meet up with friends and some are struggling at the moment. They can chat, play, and interact with each other on Minecraft without ever physically there. It's a platform to connect and create a communities.

"Young people" live in this online world , and the Bible teaches us to meet people where they are, within their communities.

"Jesus broke the boundaries of what people thought was typical worship, Jesus would be content with the idea that the church is progressing."

Every Wednesday, about 20 children aged between 11-17 spend two and a half hours on the server.

They are free to explore the world and pursue their own projects during that time however, for 30 seconds they are transported to a communal area to complete an assignment that is based on the Bible.

Mr Young stated that they'd ensured that the adults could manage the children's behavior and avoid any inappropriate language.

Rosie, 15 years old, is one of the teens who regularly joins. Minecraftservers "I love it because I can chat with my friends whilst playing, and I love it just the same as going to our normal youth club," she said.

"I thought it was great that Josh transported everyone to one location. We also held a competition to build a boat from Matthew Chapter 8, when Jesus stopped an incoming storm. My team won because we built little lightning storm clouds."
