Article content There aren't any good guys in the news this week concerning certain restaurants in Burlington, Vt., allowing their servers to add an automatic gratuity to French-Canadian patrons bills based on the theory that the servers would otherwise be slapped with a stiff. Canadians certainly have an image among Americans as poor tippers which some attribute to our higher minimum wage for servers. But the idea of a "Queeb tax," as one local humorously stated, is simple rude. It's not something I would think of from Americans their hospitality is almost unfailing.
Content of the article is also discrimination as a definition and therefore unjustifiable.

Chris Selley: Rules of social revolutionaries (and other terrible tipsters) Back to video
It's a known statistical phenomenon that, on average black Americans are less generous than white Americans. But that's not an excuse to treat a black diner worse than an individual white diner. (In fact it's illegal.) This is a great method to ensure that black diners are less likely to tip on average.

Article content This is likely to be the case for Vermonters who are Quebecers. "If you can clearly see they're from Montreal, the restaurant will add an automatic 18% just to sort of protect their bets," a Burlington server told the National Post this week. This is a bet that the restaurant would likely lose. A French-Canadian might move his business elsewhere in the event that he learned of the discriminatory treatment he received.
Article content All that said the entire idea of mandatory tipping is a societal practice that is difficult to justify logically. Why does the price printed on the menu of a restaurant meal impute the cost of ingredients rent and utilities, appliances and cookware and preparation ... but the delivery from the kitchen to the table? Why does the creation of a steak-frites have an unassailable, fixed price, while its delivery has an entirely discretionary cost that is decided by the person who receives it - a price that could theoretically be zero? Should I not be told how the tip is being divided up if it isn't going to the server as is typically the situation?
As I've said I'm ready and willing to play the game, even if it's because I don't want be disregarded in my preferred places.
Article content Speak up. This can be a struggle for timid Canadians. But while you might think it is ok to leave 5% (or less) for poor service, you'll feel more satisfied, and give the world a favor, by telling the server and his manager what a rotten experience you experienced. Also: If the steak is not cooked properly and the soup is not piping hot or if the beer is not sour, it's not the fault of the server. Return it.
Set up your revolution at your home. Tipping as the locals do. Nothing is more frustrating than going out for dinner with an Australi... or... with one from a country with no tipping who decides to explain to his North American friends, as the bill is handed in, how ridiculous it is that they must tip. It's not an excellent idea. However, your well-prepared speech indicates you were aware of the rules prior to coming out. Your presence signifies that you are willing to contribute at a reasonable amount.
Article content Join the revolution with other revolutionaries. If you believe a lower than normal tip is appropriate you can try to negotiate this with your tablemates. However, you aren't able to decide on your own what constitutes a baseline tip. And in any event, if you lose the negotiation, you're still in for the agreed-upon percentage. wowwiki Your presence also signifies your consent.
In the last instance, the tip revolutionary might demand a separate cheque and expose himself as a clod individually without causing embarrassment to his dining guests. However, he should anticipate less dinner invitations to come in the future. Restaurants in Burlington are expected to have less French-Canadians to visit in the same way as they would.
