Welcome To Sioux City
Welcome to Sioux City! This vibrant city is home to many wonderful people and amazing attractions. From the Missouri River on our downtown skyline to the rolling hills of the Loess Hills just outside of town, there is plenty to see and do in Sioux City.

The city was founded in 1854 on the banks of the Missouri River by Lewis and Clark. At that time, it was known as Fort Cantonment, and it served as a military outpost for the United States Army. In 1856, Lewis and Clark renamed the settlement Sioux City after a band of Native American people living near the river. The name Sioux comes from their word sioux, meaning people of the tall grass.

Since its founding, Sioux City has grown into one of northwest Iowa's most important cities. Today, it is home to more than 82,684 residents, making it fourth largest in Iowa after Des Moines (202,588), Omaha (198,729), and Davenport (153,564). Additionally, Sioux City is also the principal city of the five-county Sioux City–West Des Moines Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA), with a population of 168,825 in 2010.

Despite its size though – or perhaps because of it – Sioux City maintains a strong manufacturing base and is also an important transportation hub for much of Iowa and Nebraska. With major interstate highways running through town as well as rail lines connecting local factories to regional markets - not to mention multiple airports within easy reach - Sioux Citiy has everything you need for a productive life. So come on over – we'd love to have you!
