suger ego: Mr. Spencer was reading out Holden’s essay and Holden was very annoyed because of this. Even so, he doesn’t speak out or tries to stop Mr. Spencer and just sits there. He was influenced by his superego because he knew that Mr. Spencer would have yelled at him for interrupting his reading so he didn’t stop him. (Journal 1)
id: Holden continuously asked Carl personal questions that he knew that Carl didn’t want to answer. This shows that Holden knew what he was doing and fell into the want of wanting to annoy Carl which is an example of Holden falling for his id.
id: Holden knows that Ackley dislikes name calling, yet Holden is influenced by his id and does it anyway. He felt as though it would have been humorous to see Ackley’s clear disapproval. He is also not conscious that Ackley’s feelings were being hurt at that specific moment, but more of him trying to entertain himself.
id: Holden follows his id when he makes an impulsive decision to leave New York, and live as a deaf and mute person so he does not have to be bothered by people and social situations in general. He makes this decision after quickly leaving Mr. Antolini’s house, while he is walking down fifth avenue, and having visions of his brother Allie. Holden does not have much control in this situation because he is emotionally and mentally unstable.
