How do you Report Plagiarized NFTs as Stolen Art

You've been scammed.



Someone took your art and, without your consent the artist created a non-fungible token. The same scammer is now selling NFTs of your stolen art and making a lot of money. This is a tragic and regular situation. However, there are choices. However, it's difficult to get your stolen art removed from major NFT exchanges such as OpenSea or Rarible.



Here's the flip side of the overhyped NFT coin. Plagiarized art and fake works dominate what was an estimated market of $44 million. The problem is so prevalent, in fact, that in January of 2022 the self-described "world's largest and first NFT marketplace," OpenSea, admitted that more than 80 percent of NFTs that were minted using its no-cost minting tool "were plagiarized works, fake collections, and spam."



Artists are all too familiar with this less glamorous aspect of NFTs. Twitter accounts that expose minted NFTs of stolen artwork, such as @NFTtheft, have a large number of followers and call attention to this common fraud.



A Bay Area artist goes by the name "bor" and manages the @NFTtheft twitter account. They stated in a direct message that they prefer to remain anonymous because of the discrimination against artists who are opposed to non-fungible tokens.



Bor wrote that plagiarism is an intractable issue in the NFT space and will always be a component of it. "As long as anyone can mint anything while remaining pseudonymous on an unregulated/decentralized technology, plagiarism is going to be a big problem."



It's a problem that marketplaces that sell, purchase, sell, or list NFTs are well aware. The steps they take to mitigate it, however, frequently fall short. Both OpenSea and Rarible which is another OpenSea competitor, have developed ways for people to report stolen work , but as artists themselves often insist that reporting theft of artwork isn't always a simple process.



Many artists still believe that it is their only choice.



How to report a stolen NFT on OpenSea



OpenSea's Help Center is available.



Click on the "How can you help?" Server drop-down menu. Drop-down menu, choose "Intellectual Property Rights Violation/Takedown Request."





Enter your email address.





In the subject line in the subject line, type "fraudulent content."





In the "Description" section In the "Description" section, give as much detail as you can to demonstrate that an OpenSea listing is simply your artwork posted without permission (include hyperlinks). Please explain the images you've included (see Step 6 below).





Under "Attachments," include screenshots both of the places your artwork actually is on the internet (presumably someone found it to copy it before posting it on OpenSea) and the infringing NFT listings.





Hit "Submit."





It is important to note that OpenSea doesn't guarantee any results or guarantee that the company will return to you.



"When you submit a complaint the team will look over the collection and determine if it is in violation of our Terms of Service. If it does we will take it off," says the company's Help Center. Your ticket will be closed after it has been solved. You might not receive any response from us.



How can I report a lost NFT via Rarible



Rarible, like OpenSea has a reporting procedure that lets users report stolen artworks on its marketplace as NFTs that are available for sale. Rarible lets you submit stolen artwork as NFTs.



Once you've found the NFT in question, select the three dots that are located in the upper-right corner.





Select the "Report" option.





Write down that the work is stolen and provide as much detail as you can backing up your claim.





Click "Report".





Importantly, Rarible does not promise that it will remove the NFT in the case in. Rarible doesn't even guarantee it will contact you - which makes the anger of artists understandable.



How can you stop plagiarized NFTs



Despite the ability of artists to report stolen NFTs directly to the marketplaces that list them, the issue of thieves profiting off the work of designers, illustrators musicians, as well as other creators isn't close to being solved. The issue, as the artist behind the @NFTtheft Twitter account explained is a systemic issue that requires a systemic solution.



"Scammers are stealing content from YouTube, Twitter, Instagram, Deviant Art, Artstation and even Minecraft fan forums," wrote bor. "If it is possible to download it, scammers will try to steal it. Artists have less control now than ever over their work.



A quick look at Twitter shows that many artists are shocked to discover that someone has taken their work and, without knowledge, minted it and sold it as NFTs.



What other actions can those who are knowingly being dragged into this sometimes fraudulent environment take, other than notifying NFTs that are plagiarized? If Bor is correct Non-fungible token true believers won't be happy with the solution.
