New Old School RuneScape Client Breathes HD Life into An Old School Game

New Old School RuneScape client breathes HD life into an old-fashioned game

A single RuneScape fan has created an HD client for Old School RuneScape that is absolutely stunning.
Old School RuneScape has never been the most attractive game on the market however, players who don't care about graphics don't really care. What would happen if Old School RuneScape was visually impressive? In comparison to current RuneScape graphics?

A post was recently published on the Old School RuneScape subreddit, the post is by Tottty and shows a next-gen RuneScape client that takes the graphics level of RuneScape to a new level. Jordan (Totty) was capable of providing some background information on the client after the post garnered a lot of praise from gamers. Jordan explains that the client was just an idea he had in mind when he was 17, and that he began programming as a hobby.

Jagex is the company that developed RuneScape Then, they invited Jordan to Jagex HQ to discuss implementing Jordan's client into the game. Unfortunately, that never happened, so Jordan transferred the client to a third-party developer, which funnily enough they didn't complete either. Jordan decided to create a new client once the third-party developer handed over the rights to the client back. Jordan declares that "So here I am in 2020 trying again. After seeing the shift in perception of third party clients in the community as well as Jagex's blog posts, I decided this was the perfect time to realistically be allowed to release this."

Jordan has also stated that he plans to release the game because the game's creator is by profession. So when will it launch? Jordan states that it's hard to forecast as the project is rife with problems. "The timeline is difficult to estimate, as this is a completely unique project in the sense that there are some peculiarities. Such as the game being written in Java, and Unity employing C#. I like to think I'm nearing the 90% mark, at least for the early access milestone."

What are the advantages of having an HD Old School RuneScape client that is powered by the Unity engine? Firstly, from the player's viewpoint, Old School RuneScapers would be able to select what kind of graphics they play the game on. Although the majority of Old School RuneScapers are happy to play with old-school graphics, some would prefer to be able to switch to a more modern engine.

Jagex should be able to support the development of this client in any form:

Here's why. The MMO gaming world is deficient of an outstanding game for gamers to sink their teeth into right now. Gamers who did not play RuneScape in its peak from 2007 and 2013 might be interested in Old School RuneScape. However they might not be able to enjoy RuneScape's graphics quality. Old School RuneScape's graphic limitations could be limiting the growth of its player base. The introduction of a brand new HD client could mean that the game could attract a large number of players looking for an amazing MMO.

This is why Jagex should be a part of the development of the HD client. If a HD client for Old School RuneScape is created and promoted correctly it will attract new MMO players who were initially interested in RuneScape but didn't like the graphics. This would increase the number of players in Old School RuneScape and also please existing players who desire new graphics.

Interview:

Jordan was an Discord contact I made recently and we conducted an interview to get his thoughts on the HD client and how it could affect Old School RuneScape.

Q: Would Jagex like to support this HD client?

A: I believe that the client is most efficient when they are an external client. This is the same method that RL (RuneLite), operates. A healthy dialogue with Jagex to ensure everything is on the same page. I can only think of it as a supplement to the game, but it's not for everyone which is why it is a good choice as a third-party client.
