Tim Sweeney, founder and CEO of Epic Games, says that the Epic Games store "definitely won't" restrict the sale of games that feature NFTs. Sweeney's statement follows a statement from Minecraft developer Mojang which laid out the company's stance to not allow blockchain technology or NFTs in Minecraft.
Following Mojang's declaration, one fan contacted Sweeney on Twitter to enquire whether Epic Games would take a similar stance, but Sweeney responded in the negative.
He believes that developers should be able to decide how to build their games and that you should be able to decide whether or no to play them. "I believe that operating system and stores manufacturers shouldn't be trying to dictate their opinions on other players. We definitely won't."
Another user responded to Sweeney's post, asking what the difference is from the Epic Games policy that prohibits discriminatory and hateful content. Sweeney explained that this is due to "editorial and branding judgments" and believes that Epic has made the decision "to draw a line at the accepted norms."
Some users of the PC gaming subreddit have expressed their displeasure with Sweeney's stance. This is despite the fact that Epic CEO John McDonnell has been vocal against NFTs in the past. In September 2021, Sweeney publicly posted a version of an email in a tweet reply which states "We don't want to touch NFTs because the whole field is currently involved in an incredibly complex mixture of scams, intriguing decentralised tech foundations, as well as scams."
Sweeney now says that he believes Epic Game store developers should have the option of pursuing these integrations, but the statement isn't ambiguous. He said in an update tweet that "Crypto is complicated.
