Minecraft Vs. Roblox: how these Games Stack up for Kids

Minecraft and Roblox are incredibly popular games that resemble sandboxes. Both allow you to create games, meet other players, and of course, play for hours. Both have friendly online communities that are ready to help. But Minecraft and Roblox are actually quite different when you get into the details. Here's how they compare on five essential aspects:

THE CONTENDERS

Minecraft. Recommended for players aged 8+. It is an open, exploratory and creative environment that allows players to create items and buildings from scratch using materials they gather from the world.

Roblox. Best for age 13+. This website for game creation allows users to create and upload their own games as well as playing other games in a multi-player.

Price

Minecraft's first cost is $26.95 for Mac and PC, whereas Roblox offers an "freemium/premium” model.

Roblox lets you play games and create the games you want to play for free, but you have to subscribe to do the things that are really enjoyable like customizing your avatar, buy and trade weapons, and create additional games. Roblox's ingame currency Robux can be purchased as a 'la carte. However it's worth signing up for the Builders Club ($5.95 per month), which removes ads, lets you manage more games and offers you daily Robux.

It's simple to use

Both are quite difficult, but that's the point of the game's uniqueness. Minecraft does not provide any instructions, however it offers three levels of difficulty. You can learn to play Minecraft by looking around the game, playing around and watching YouTube videos and reading other fan-made content (there is plenty of it online).

Roblox offers two ways to playing that is creating and playing. The games that other players play offer a lot of variety, but it can be a bit frustrating as the games are designed by users. Roblox offers a wealth of information, a wiki and an incredibly supportive community for kids interested in creating their own games.

Social Aspects

This is the biggest wild card. Both games support multiplayer play, but Minecraft is better suited to playing by yourself. Roblox, on the other hand, is social right from the moment you sign up. Friendship and chatting are key elements of the game. (Review our rules for social media for elementary school-age kids.) City2020.Com Roblox and Minecraft both have lots of user-generated content. Players of all age groups, including teens play and play in the game. With any content that is created by users your child may be exposed to strong sexually explicit imagery, language, and violence. You can limit some of these through Roblox's built-in controls. Roblox allows you to shut off chat and block individuals. Minecraft lets you "ignoreother players, but does not limit what you can say.

Safety

There have been instances of inappropriate predatory behavior in chat and multiplayer modes. In response, Roblox has beefed up its child safety initiative to include more moderators from humans, parental controls, and other features to keep out offenders. You can play Minecraft on your own or with a limited number of friends. Contact with strangers is restricted. But if your kid wants to play on a public server choose one that is kid-friendly.

Kid-Friendliness

Both Minecraft and Roblox have huge followings on social media, so kids can find lots of other content -- websites, YouTube videos, even Reddit forums that can expose them to mature topics when they're searching for information about the games. Roblox allows users to integrate ads into their games, which means that kids are exposed to in-game advertisements. Violence can be an issue in both games, but while Roblox's user-uploaded games tend to be more of the shooter/explosion/disaster variety, Minecraft's leans more toward hand-to-hand combat, even though it's depicted in a cartoonish way.

Creativity and learning

Yes! Both games can teach basic computer coding skills (Minecraft employs an adaptation of Minecraft Java and Roblox uses the Lua programming language), though Minecraft is the superior game when it comes to being education-friendly. Both games promote math skills and problem-solving, reasoning and collaboration. Because of the digital content you can create as well as the interaction with other online users Both games are becoming more popular in after-school programs, computer camps and teacher's lesson plans.
