Colorless Diamonds

A diamond is the most popular and most traded of the four gemstones. It is used in many different ways, from stacking on top of each other to create a brilliant and elaborate setting, to acting as the focal point of a simple and elegant design. Perhaps the most versatile of all the diamonds, the yellow gold-rimmed diamond, can be used in any of these ways.

The Rise In Popularity
You might be wonde Lab grown diamond Engagement ring where all the diamond jewelry comes from. After all, most people think of diamonds as being a very exotic and expensive gemstone. The truth is that, for centuries, diamonds have been seen as a “common” or “typical” gemstone, valued for their rarity and cut quality rather than for their design or uniqueness. It wasn't until the late 1800s that diamonds began to attract attention for their design.

Thanks largely to the work of two designers, Leon Artur Friedenstein and Karl Langer, and the development of synthetic stones like plastic, that people started seeing diamonds as something more than a simple piece of jewelry to be stored in a safe. Through their creativity and innovation, Friedenstein and Langer changed the face of diamond design as we know it. They brought attention to diamonds as a brilliant and unique gemstone, as well as for their cut and polish, by incorporating various designs and complex cuts into their creations. Since then, diamonds have been the focus of many great designers, and quite a few terrible ones as well (such as the “diamond” jewelry sold by Zales Jewelry). However, even the most skilled designers couldn't keep up with the growing demand for diamonds, especially as factories began manufacturing cheaper and cheaper synthetics (usually backed by a gold or other metal). In addition to this, the popularity of diamonds is also due to their status as a “safe” investment. When the stock market crashed in 2008, as it did in many parts of the world, diamonds were one of the few investment options that people could turn to with some level of confidence.

What Is A Diamond?
According to the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), “A diamond is a transparent, solid, inorganic compound of carbon. It is one of the most useful and versatile gemstones known. Diamonds are also valued for their rarity as well as their beauty. Naturally, they are extremely scarce and expensive gemstones. This makes them a desirable addition to any jewelry collection or purchase. The four C's (Color, Clarity, Cut and Carat) go hand in hand to determine the value and quality of a diamond. In general, a diamond is considered excellent if it scores high on all four criteria.”

Cut
The cut of a diamond is closely related to its clarity and color, which determine the brilliance and value of a diamond. A poorly cut diamond with flawless clarity will appear dull and lackluster, not to mention the fact that it is a bit more expensive to produce. Therefore, a well-cut diamond with flaws in it will still appear brilliant and will retain its value easily. Most diamonds are cut using modern diamond-cutting machines, making it possible for any skilled gemologist to cut a diamond to their exact specifications, down to the +/– one-thousandth of a millimeter. This is why a diamond is one of the most versatile and unique gemstones out there. It can be cut and shaped into any form that the imagination can conceive of. This is also why it is considered such a “common” or “typical” gemstone. As long as there is a diamond cutter around, there will be a diamond to be cut!

Clarity
A diamond's clarity determines the presence of any inclusions (foreign objects) in the diamond. Inclusions are essentially any matter that is not a diamond (e.g. rocks, metal shavings, clay, insects, etc.) that is found in the diamond. Inclusions can cause problems for the diamond cutter, if they are larger than a certain size. If the diamond is cut with these inclusions (especially at the edges), it will lose some of its luster and value. The larger the diamond, the greater the chances of it containing inclusions. Most diamonds contain some inclusions, although it is exceptionally rare to find a diamond that is completely free of them. This is why a diamond is considered a “mixed” or “impure” diamond when it contains inclusions of any kind.

Color
A diamond's color is sometimes difficult to determine, especially since the meaning of the term is subjective. There are however, a few “colorless” diamond assortments that are actually colorful (e.g. the diamonds produced by Graff Diamonds). In general, a diamond is a colorless or nearly so, when held to the light. The closer a diamond is to being colorless, the more brilliant and the more valuable it will be. This is why a diamond is graded on a color scale, based on how well it measures up against the standards established by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). The more a diamond measures up against these standards, the more brilliant and valuable it will be. Most diamonds are graded on a color scale ranging from D to Z (with D being the best rating and Z being the worst). The lower the number, the more brilliant and valuable the diamond is. For example, a diamond graded in the range of E to J is still considered extremely valuable, as these diamonds are exceptionally rare and difficult to attain a perfect score for. The closer a diamond is to being colorless, the rarer and more expensive it will be.

Carat
A diamond's carat (or weight) is a measurement of the diamond's size ranging from 200 to 500 millimeter. A one carat diamond is equivalent to 200 millimeter or 200 points. Therefore, a two carat diamond is equivalent to 400 millimeter or 400 points. A five carat diamond is equivalent to 500 millimeter or 500 points. The more points a diamond has, the greater its value. A one carat diamond is extremely small, even by the standards of gemstones; it is about the size of a pinhead. This makes it easy to transport and exhibit in any way that the owner sees fit. As you can imagine, a one carat diamond is not suitable for setting in gold or other jewelry items, as it will be too small and appear to be too faint for the setting to be visible. Most diamonds are graded on a carat scale, ranging from a twenty carat diamond (equivalent to a 500 millimeter or 500 point diamond) to a one carat diamond (200 millimeter or 200 point diamond). The smaller the carat, the rarer and more expensive the diamond will be.
