Zoom is a well-known tool for attending weddings during COVID-19. But what about having the entire wedding take place in the metaverse? An immersive virtual world where each guest can be an avatar? It turns out that it's actually happening.
Article content And the reaction on the internet has been mixed, with some people elated by the concept, and others debating it or pointing out something similar has been happening for years on other platforms, but with far more impressive graphics.
It's really hard to imagine anything more harrowing. Fun gallery I don't think there's anything better than watching cartoons of people in conference calls. Call it what you want.
The New York Times reported that Traci and Dave Gagnon got married in the metaverse over the Labor Day weekend. The couple had an in-person wedding at a golf course in New Hampshire, but also had one in the virtual world at the same time for any friends and family who couldn't make it. Instead of having a video conference, the couple decided to have the entire event take place in a virtual space. Images from the real-life wedding were broadcasted in the virtual space.
The backlash to the story was swift, with Jezebel declaring in a headline: "The Metaverse might be the worst thing to ever happen to weddings." The gossip site also pointed out that this trend could make it impossible to politely decline an invitation to a wedding.
Article content on Twitter, many users disagreed that this was a new idea.
One user wrote, "This was happening 20 years ago, but why is this so special now?"
Others claimed that the graphics in games like Second Life and World of Warcraft were superior 15 years ago.
"Really it's hard to think of anything better, anything I'd want to do other than stare at the cartoons of people on a conference call," another Twitter user wrote. "Call it what you like."

Article content The Gagnons stated that their wedding could take place in the metaverse so people could attend even if they weren't able to physically. Traci's maid of honor was able to walk Traci down the aisle. Dave's friend was also able to deliver his toast even though he was unable to attend due to his wife's pre-existing medical issues.
The metaverse hosting the wedding was created by Virbela the company that, according to its website, "builds 3D immersive worlds for events and work learning." It is compatible with almost all computers and does not require a VR headset.
The result was not well-liked by Gamers.
