'Minecraft' Tops 100 million Sales

The Minecraft juggernaut shows no sign of slowing down. Today, the developer Mojang announced that the block-building game has surpassed 100 million sales across all platforms including PC, Mac, consoles and mobile. Since the beginning of the year, about 53,000 copies of the game have been sold each day around the world. The game is addictive. More than 40 million people open Minecraft every month to play with the axe, shovel and sword. A few games have even come close to reaching 100 million players and that's not even Tetris.



A large part of this success is due to the game's open structure and limitless potential. Players can build anything they imagine with the help of its outward-facing geometry. is made up of simple, colorful blocks. Many players continue to play for a long time even though they're old. Mojang has supported the game with a steady stream of updates that include new mechanics, creatures and even materials. The game's versatility has been a hit in the classroom, teaching art, geology programming, and many other subjects.



When Microsoft bought Mojang almost two years ago, people were wondering what the company had in mind for the game. A sequel? SYSTEM32 Some kind of exclusivity to Xbox, PC and Windows Phone? It's not been able to be achieved. Minecraft is accessible on more platforms than ever before, and there's no word of a 'Minecraft 2.' Instead, we have a HoloLens Minecraft version, a spin-off adventure series from Telltale Games, and an acquisition by MinecraftEdu. This will soon result in a brand new educational-focused Minecraft. Soon, there will be a special version for China as well.



Minecraft's popularity isn't showing any signs of waning. The strength of Minecraft isn't its finite story or stunning graphics. It has a seemingly timeless appeal that draws young children as they age enough to play it. As long as this continues, Minecraft will continue to sell at a phenomenal rate.
