Young Leaders Day Encourages Students to Pursue their Dreams.

Live a 3-D experience. This is the challenge that inspiring New Zealand leaders put to the entire crowd of more than 2000 primary and intermediate students from 147 schools during the National Young Leaders Day (NYLD) - held at the Vodafone Events Centre in Manukau earlier today.

Students heard from Laura Langman, a Silver Fern and Northern Mystics player, and Cam Calkoen, an athlete and founder of the Carabiner Mentoring Programme, as in addition to Jamie Fitzgerald, chief executive at The Mind Lab Frances Valintine and Charlie Laumatia, presenter of Attitude Programmes for Schools.

NYLD events this year challenge students to live a 3D life by dreaming, daring , and improving their leadership skills.

"Just as when a 3D film that explodes off the screen, a 3D life is so much better than a dull flat one," NYLD manager Annette Fale declares.

"Dream what your life could be... then chase your dream. Do the bold and terrifying things that make life interesting. Your strengths are your most valuable assets. There is so much more to you than you think. Students were taught that vision, hard work and determination are the key to a successful life.

Frances Valintine was the driving force behind Media Design School. She opened The Mind Lab in Newmarket in 2013, a facility that teaches robotics as well as filmmaking, electronics programming and science technology to children aged 4-15 years old.

Frances demanded that the next generation of leaders to be ready for a changing future.

"To prepare for the future, you must to open your mind and be curious. This will be your biggest strength not technology, not how well you can play Minecraft but curiosity and discovery," Frances said, as students wrote notes in their notebooks.

"Wake up every morning and think about ways I can improve my life.

The day was not just inspiring, but also enjoyable. A performance by The Laughing Samoans, interactive games and 3D video clips were highlights of the day.

Since 2001, over 90,000 New Zealand students have attended a National Young Leaders Day. The events are held every year in Auckland, Wellington, Palmerston North, Rotorua, Christchurch and Dunedin.
