This module is designed to introduce students to professional development skills that will increase their employability profile. Leadership skills will also be covered in relation to the practice of business management, taken as part and parcel of professional development and to reinforce the purposeful planning of one’s career. In this module, students will learn how to create financial statements, examine how costs are classified, how budgets are created and the various reports generated.
There will be exposure to apply digital and information literacy skills, build competence through self-directed learning methods, and acquire the skills of being a lifelong learner. The subject covers learning needs analysis, design, implementation and evaluation of a learning programme and career development. An understanding of these concepts will help students understand the importance of learning and talent development to improve individual and organisational performance. In general, students will be able to comprehend the business environment, business operations and law, and consumer behaviour.
The credits gained by achieving the Diploma in Business Studies would enable progression to a suitable Advanced Diploma in Business Studies, and the skills learned would equip students for entry to a career in industry. It consists of 5 Modular Certificates conducted over 5 semesters, 1 MC per semester. Students are expected to complete their work-based assessment in the form of the Industrial Attachment Logbook during the 6-month period. Students who are for any reason unable to complete the Diploma and who have successfully passed a minimum of 4 modules are eligible for an Exit Award of a Certificate in Business Studies. Students must complete and pass all required modules in this course to receive a Diploma in Business Studies certification.
Learners will be taught to apply the Design Thinking framework to develop problem statements, ideate and identify feasible solutions. In addition, commercial awareness will be imbued in learners through various innovation and entrepreneurship concepts or tools. This subject also prepares students to be self-directed lifelong learners who are digital and information literate. It nurtures communicative and collaborative citizens who can use objective analysis in problem-solving. It covers the importance of workplace readiness skills to adapt and respond to the changing job market environment. Career ownership and continuous learning for lifelong employability will be emphasised.
