"Sully Love" - Customers Will Like You More If You Fly Them Into the Hudson River?
"I smudged. I placed a tenant into an owner's home and so they finished up tearing it and not paying rent. There is no way they'll ever hire me again..." (Charlotte Property Manager)
"It was crazy, the thing is. I took off then couple of hours later, I landed in Charlotte. I guess technically you can state that I did my job. But the guy who crashed in to the river, no, he's the hero. It's weird, right?" (Bitter Captain Roger Baines, played by Jason Sudeikis- Saturday Night Live Weekend Update Thursday- 10/2/09)
Captain Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger came to fame since the pilot who flew the 1/15/09 US Airways Flight 1549 from New York to Charlotte. Most people remember fondly the story; it became national news for weeks because the plane occurred within the Hudson River minutes after takeoff. You would figure if you had been on that flight, choosing really upset! You paid money to be in Charlotte in roughly a couple of hours, but alternatively, you had been heavily delayed, drenched, your luggage was ruined, plus your life flashed before your vision. All meetings you'd that day needed to be cancelled. property management carlton were shot. Your life was endangered. You could are already contemplating who you might sue. You would certainly never fly US Air again!
You'd appreciate Captain Baines "good pilot" joke later inside the Saturday Night Live skit:
Q: What did the excellent pilot do when he saw the flock of geese?
A: He avoided them and continued to Charlotte where he landed seven minutes early
However, Sully became a national hero. What??? Though he saved the lives of his passengers, he still did land inside a river containing to be considered as a failure. Was he a seasoned publicity professional who spun the storyplot well afterwards? Hardly. Sully finds as a soft-spoken guy. His "speech" to the passengers ahead of the crash would be a brief and hardly eloquent, "Brace for impact." Inexplicably, it didn't matter. The passengers loved him. They were thankful and effusive in praise. No one said they wouldn't fly with him again; in reality, most would prefer to ask him to captain their flights inside future. Many Americans said a similar thing. How could this happen to be?
The simplest response is that most people are aware that things fail. It's inevitable. Sully could do little after he hit the flock of geese that caused the engines to fail. As Charles Swindoll said, "Life is 10% of what happens to you and also 90% of how you reply to it." Sully calmly place the plane down and salvaged what he could beyond a hardcore situation. His passengers knew he what food was in control and works to make sure their safety.
In property management, picking tenants who'll always pay and treat a rental home with respect is surely an inexact science. You try to mitigate risk by performing credit and background record checks, verifying income and employment, and calling past landlords. You collect security deposits and drive by houses to see if they look okay. At the end of the afternoon, however, that you do not accept them and cannot force visitors to fulfill their obligations. It's tough.
But when bad things happen (and so they will eventually), it's really a positive as well. It creates a chance to show customers that you just care, it allows you to find out more about them personally, and permits you to demonstrate that you just have a prefer to correct things. Most of our clients receive their monthly rent (directly deposited to their account) so we rarely get the opportunity to talk to them outside of our initial meeting. But when issues arise, we to create a bond together while attempting to manage to get thier properties back on track.
Paradoxically, the clients whose homes we've had a problem with tend to get life-long customers, while people who receive their rent smoothly monthly are the ones I bother about losing. Relationships require give-and-take and quite often form out of adversity; without, you'll be able to turned into a faceless entity that has no emotional connection.
Out of the disaster, Sully built a bond a single day along with his passengers that few, if any, pilots opportunity have with theirs, even their frequent flyers. Think about it. Who was the pilot of your last flight? Of your last ten?
So don't cringe when something goes wrong. It will give you a chance to find some good of these lasting "Sully Love."
