No NFTs In Minecraft, Mojang Says

The update starts with a brief explanation of what NFTs are, with a note about their extreme volatility, before laying out the current rules for Minecraft servers. The goal of these policies, Mojang said, is "to ensure that Minecraft remains a community in which everyone can access the same content." NFTs on the other hand, are specifically designed to "create models of exclusion and scarcity" which obviously conflicts with that principle. They're out.

Mojang has stated that blockchain technology are not permitted to be integrated into our client or server apps, nor can Minecraft game-specific content such as skins, worlds and other items be used with blockchain technology to create a rare digital asset.

The update was likely inspired by the fact that many Minecraft-related NFTs and play-to-earn server are already in existence making use of the lapse in official policy and dividing the community into "the haves and the not-so-haves," Mojang said.

A further issue is the fact that certain NFTs "may not be trustworthy and could end up costing players who buy them," which is a remarkably polite way of putting it: The unofficial Minecraft NFT game Blockverse (opens in a new tab), which disappeared with more than $1.2 million in January, is just one of the many examples of NFT-related malfeasance (opens in new tab) and criminality (opens in new tab) we've witnessed over the past few years. This is particularly true for Minecraft because its players tend to be younger than other games, which makes it likely to be more vulnerable to scams.

The official Minecraft guidelines for use (opens in new tab) are being revised to address the issue in depth, but the short version is a hard no: "NFTs associated with any game content, such as skins, worlds and other items, or other mods" are strictly disallowed.

That's not necessarily the end of the story: Mojang has said it will continue to track the advancement of blockchain technology to determine whether it will "enable more secure gaming experiences or other practical and inclusive applications in gaming," suggesting that official support could be possible in the near future. At present, however, "we have no plans to incorporate blockchain technology into Minecraft."
