Minecraft Player Spends two Years Building a Virtual City

Minecraft player invests two years building a virtual city by Zoe Kleinman Technology reporter, BBC News

17 October 2014

A student from Delaware has spent two years creating a virtual world he has named Titan City in the video game Minecraft.

Titan City is built out of 4.5 million Minecraft building blocks and contains 96 buildings.

Duncan Parcells says it has taken the project two years to complete, averaging up to five hours a week on the project.

His first building was a virtual replica of the World Trade Center, which took 18 months to complete.

The 19-year-old is of the opinion that Titan City is not a realistic New York model.

He said to the BBC, "It's inspired New York."

"A majority of people think it's a recreation but it's not."

The city was initially constructed using the Xbox 360 version, but the game has since been transferred to the PC version, which he claims offers more construction possibilities.

Mr Parcells plans to build an airport as well as a sports arena.

"I believe it's an outlet for architecture and energy," he said.

"Architecture has always been something that I have enjoyed. I am most happy with Victorian-style buildings that are less modern and more art deco.

"A lot of people drop in and are looking to explore the area or assist in the construction." A lot of them help with the construction of roads."

While Titan City has received a warm reception online and offline, Mr Parcells said that until now he has kept his virtual world apart from his daily life.

"I've kept it under wraps It's like a second life I'm not talking about, but people are beginning to find out," he said.

"My parents believe it's cool. I'm guessing they're just happy I don't do it too much."

Microsoft recently announced that it would purchase Minecraft studio Mojang in a deal of $2.5bn (PS1.5bn).

The game logged its 100 millionth player in February 2014, the game's creator Markus Persson, aka Notch announced on Twitter.

After the initial purchase of the game Minecraft is free to play but there are in-game purchases available.

The game is played in a virtual environment composed of cubes crafted from various materials. Nearly all of them can be used as building blocks, and some can be refined into usable raw materials (wood, iron, diamond and so on.).

The game requires you to survive by building shelters using blocks and turn raw materials and their combinations into useful items (swords and bows, armor and so on.) to defeat the many monsters in the game.
