British Museum to be digitally recreated in Minecraft By Joe Miller Technology Reporter
23 September 2014
The British Museum in London, complete and all of its exhibits, will be recreated in Minecraft.
This project is part of the Museum of the Future plan, which aims expand the institution’s appeal.
Many real-life agencies have created maps for Minecraft, including Ordnance Survey (Danish government) and Ordnance Survey (Ordnance Survey). These maps aim to raise awareness of their work among young people.
Last week, Minecraft was purchased by Microsoft for $2.5bn (PS1.5bn).
A spokeswoman for museum said that the project was still in the "early planning stage" and that construction had not begun.
She said that the organization was looking to recruit people to assist with the "construction".

The first national public museum in the world, founded in 1753
The UK's most loved visitor attraction
Nearly six million people visit each year, and eight million objects are kept in the museum.
Its natural histories collections were moved in the 1880s to South Kensington, which would become South Kensington's Natural History Museum.
Its instantly recognisable Great Court, designed and built by Lord Foster, is Europe's largest covered public space.
One British Museum employee posted details of the project on the social media site Reddit, asking for volunteers to get involved.
He received enthusiastic responses from Minecraft fans all over the world.
Initial stages
The digital creation of the Great Court and facade will be the first step.
The institution hopes that the stage will be ready in plenty of time for a public discussion entitled Changing public dialogues using museum collections in a digital age. This debate will take place on 16 October.
Ovum's Ovum gaming analyst Ed Barton told the BBC that the British Museum's move towards Minecraft would make it "perceived to be something fun" and serve as an educational tool for a younger audience.
"It's like building the British Museum in Lego," said he. Extremecraft "You have to build this brick by brick."
He added that the institution was to be commended for crowdsourcing the project, "as it turns it into a collaborative thing" and could further engage young Minecraft enthusiasts.
He said, "What cool project it would to be asked build the Elgin Marbles using Minecraft."
Reddit is the place to register interest in contributing to British Museum's projects.
