Minecraft Game Adds Ordnance Survey GB Terrain Data

Minecraft game adds Ordnance Survey GB terrain data By Matthew Wall Technology reporter, BBC News

23 September 2013

Minecraft, the highly-popular building and monsters videogame, can now include precise Ordnance Survey terrain details of Great Britain in it's blockwork virtual universe.

The game's 33,000,000 members can create worlds over geographically correct landscapes covering 224,000 square kilometers (86,000 sq miles).

The GB Minecraft world was created in two weeks by intern Joseph Braybrook working with OS's Innovation Labs team.

It uses OS OpenData products free of charge.

Graham Dunlop (OS Innovation Lab Manager) stated, "We believe we may have created perhaps the largest Minecraft universe ever built based upon real-world data."

"The resulting map not only shows the enormous potential for Minecraft to be used for computer technology and geography in schools, but also shows the vast scope of OS OpenData applications."

Minecraft, which was created by Markus "Notch", a Swede in 2009, is a virtual realm made up of cubes that contain different materials such as rock, sand, and even lava.

Players can work together to build shelters, make things from raw materials, and fight off various monsters.

More than 22 billion Minecraft blocks are contained in the OS GB world.

After players have downloaded the map to Minecraft, they can access the 3D virtual world via OS's Southampton head office. From there they can recreate real-life features like Stonehenge and imagine buildings like Hogwarts castle.

OS Terrain 50, OS VectorMap and OS Terrain 50 are OS map products that create a 3D model for the earth's surface. This model is then overlaid by features such as water, trees, and roads.

The terrain can be reconstructed by players.

OS is the GB’s official national mapping agency. Its data includes the mainland, surrounding islands, but it does not include Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, Isle of Man and Channel Islands.
