How To Setup A Simple Minecraft Server

Note: This guide shows you how to set up and configure a Minecraft Server. However, doing this requires changing your home networks configuration and is not recommended unless you know what you are doing. Minecraft Realms is a place where you can purchase a small server for your friends. If you're still interested in setting your own private server, please be aware that we are unable to support private servers or home networks.

Here's how to create a server so that your friends can join together and play!

Java must be installed on the computer hosting the server in order to run.jar files. 1. Go to this website and download the minecraft_server.1.XX.X.jar file (The X's will be the current version number) 2. After downloading it, create a folder in your desktop to store all server files. It can be named "Minecraft Server". 3. Drag and copy the.jar file into your Minecraft Server folder.

4. While the file browser is open, open the command prompt in the start menu.

5. You can verify if Java is installed at command prompt by typing "java –version" without quotes

6. To start the Minecraft Server, you will need change the directory location to the one where the Minecraft Server folder and.jar file are located.

7. Simply click on the directory in Windows browser here. Copy the address to your clipboard.

8. Type without quotes "cd" hit space and then paste the address you just copied, then hit enter.- This should look like "cd C:UsersAdminDesktopMinecraft Server"

9. Type the following into your command prompt manually without quotation marks after inputting the directory.Java -jar "name of your jar".jar

10. After pressing Enter, you will receive an error message about the failed to load properties and failed eula.txt. Do not panic, as you will need to rerun the command after we have configured these files.

11. Back in the Minecraft Server folder open the "eula.txt' file that has been created with your text editor. Here you will need to set the eula=false to eula=true and save.

12. You will also see a "server.properties" file if it does not appear like an editable text file, right-click it and click "Open with" click "More apps" if you are on Windows 10 and scroll down and select your text editor or notepad. If you do not want this step to be repeated every time you edit a.properties file it is advisable to keep the box stating "Always open this app to edit.properties" intact.

13. You will see many settings here, so we will only focus on the most important to get your server up and running. Pay attention to the query.port setting. This is the port that you need to forward to your local router in order to allow other inbound connections.

14. You can set the gamemode to survival or creative. Specify what you would like by typing after the "=".

Spawn-protection specifies the radius of blocks in the server spawn that cannot be broken. Minecraft-servers If you don't want them to be broken, you can set this to 0.

15. The allow-nether specifies if you would like the Nether on your server.

The server's difficulty can be set by its difficulty. This can be peaceful or normal.

16. You can set the pvp setting to allow players to hurt each other.

17. The max-players setting specifies the maximum number of people who can join your server. This can be adjusted to reflect the amount of RAM your server has.

18. If you have a level-seed, you can insert a seed to create a world.

Motd sets the message in the Minecraft server browser that other players will see once they have added your IP to their list.

You will need to run the launch command again in the command prompt. The server should now be up and running. Repeat steps 8-9 to launch your server again.

Make sure you are in Minecraft Server's file directory. Next, enter java-jar "your name".jar into the command prompts

For more details on all the settings for the server.properties file you can go here. Scroll down to the Java Edition.

You will also need forward the port listed under server.properties query.port. It defaults to 25565. In your router settings, you will need the port to be forward. This process may vary depending on the router manufacturer. If you need assistance in forwarding a port, please refer to your router's help site/manual.

If you didn't specify anything in the server ip setting, default will be to point to your public IP. This is what other players will need for connection to your server to play with you.

You can search for your public IP address by simply typing "What is your public IP?" make sure you look for an IP address that is IPv4, this means it only has three decimals and only contains numbers.

Your public IP is your security risk. We strongly advise you to keep it private and not advertise with it. Only give your IP address to people you are comfortable with and trust.
